Pre-race routine:

Got up at 3:00 AM due to Holly coming in our room Left the house at 4:00 AM for the drive to Oshkosh. Ate some M&M pancakes w/peanut butter, a banana, some coffee and a bottle of water while rocking out to some great music during the drive.
Event warmup:

Set-up transition and talked to donks, djdavey, jmwebs, deannaS, bunnyT, pjgrande, and donkey soon to be Schwimmy Coach. Swam a little bit to get the feel of the water. A woman in front of us at the swim start fforgot to put here chip on - instead of running back and getting it she says - Is' ok I just won't be timed - why pay for the race then?
Swim
  • 23m 8s
  • 1444 yards
  • 01m 35s / 100 yards
Comments:

Got in the water and the whole wave wanted to start on the outside nobody wanted the front and inside - kind of funny. Walked 50 yds or so then started the swim nice and easy. The water isonly 5 ft deep on the whole course. Sighting out was pretty good. T-boned a guy who was swimming perpendicular to the course. Ran into another one just standing in the middle of the course. Otherwise unenventful swim. The last 150-200 yds before the turn around the waves really picked up. Hit the bouy spot on.
Drifted a little right on the return but not to bad. Saw bunnt and pjgrand waiting to start the spring on my run out of the water - got some high fives and a donkey cheer.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. I know this will get better with time. Work on not drifting to the right.
Transition 1
  • 01m 16s
Comments:

Did my business and got the hell out. I had a good transition spot for this one because I was close to the swim in and bike out.
What would you do differently?:

Learn to put my feet in shoes on bike. Otherwise I am very happy with this one.
Bike
  • 1h 23m 32s
  • 28.5 miles
  • 20.47 mile/hr
Comments:

Drank aero bottle of water, 1/2 bottle of GE and 1 Hammer Gel.. I don't know if the GE sits well in my stomach - felt a little bloated.
What would you do differently?:

More bike miles and better base - otherwise I was happy with this ride.
Transition 2
  • 01m 11s
Comments:

Really good time considering I had to run all the way across and thru transition to rack my bike. Remember to grab hat and number and put them on while running which helps.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 46m 29s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 07m 30s  min/mile
Comments:

Legs felt really good off the bike. Focused on keeping a quick cadence. Wanted to run a good pace out to the turn around and pick it up and the way back. On the way out saw pjgrande and bunnyT coming in from their sprint runs - both looked really good.

Had someone pass me 2 miles into the run and he thanked me for being a good carrot. Some other dood passes me and asks why the carrot is on the back? Duh, because the donkey is on the front.

Saw all the donks racing today on the run course - all looked really good

Was able to pick up the pace at mile 4, mile 5 and again near the finish as I wanted.

Got to see JR and family cheering me on near the finish line along with pjgrand taking photos.
What would you do differently?:

Very happy with this run. Needed a good run after the bonkage at SOR.
Post race
Warm down:

Got some water and heered on for all the other donks to finish. Mrs. jmwebs found some 2 ft. long carrots that she was passing out to donkeys right before the finish line. Very funny. Talke to me Mrs and the kiddos. Thanked them for making the long trip up to cheer me on - always appreciated.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

This was about as good as I can do with my training at this point. That being said I hope to go to PP next week and push myself harder.

Event comments:

My only complaint for this race is that there was little to no water and food left at the finish line.

Otherwise, I had a great time at this race. I am glad I made the trip. All the Donkeys and donkey families rock. Congrats to DeannaS and Schwimmy Coach on their first Oly's, jmwebs for his PR, bunnyT for his first "tri" and OWS, djdavey for his effort, wit and encouragement in the waning days of his Ironman training, and of course pjgrande and tripletmon for their hardware.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot. Got to meet BpMoozer. She gave me a shout out on the run course and then came to introduce herself in transition after the race. Thanks for coming over and great to meet you.

Course: Overall these roads were in the best condition of any I have ridden on this summer. Lots of nice smooth blacktop. Took advantage of the wind at my back at the start, then had to turn into it for the middle third of the race. Dropped it into a lower gear and just kept turning circles. The OLy course ties into the spring course near the end and what a cluster $%#& that was. There was at least a 1/4 mile of cars in each direction stopped at the intersection and some not so nice people yelling profanities. The last 3-4 miles had lots of sprinters on mountain bikes - had to do a little weaving but not too bad.

Great job on the race!

I was curious on your thoughts about the swim course though. I know that the water was shallow (5 feet), but I was extremely surprised to see the lack of lifeguard/boat support along the route. For the Oly, there was only the boat behind the turnaround. I am only 5'2", so if I was in distress, I would still have some trouble. I am comfortable in the water, so I wasn't worried, but when we were lining up, my first thought was - where are the lifeguards?? I think the sprint had a few more, but not many. I guess as a former lifeguard, I was just surprised to see no one along the Oly course.

Congrats on a good race!

Great race! You're really kicking it this year.

(Oh, and I had the same thought on the lack of lifeguards. I don't remember that from last year.

Great race Clint! You kicked this course in the azz! Swimming into a guy just standing there, yes, the risks of a shallow swim. Great hanging out with you and the family. Glad you enjoyed the carrots.
