Total Time = 2h 33m 49s
Overall Rank = 96/366
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 14/40
Pre-race routine:

Got up at 4 am. Ate bowl of Cream of Wheat, hard-boiled egg, banana, cup of coffe. Drove 1 hour to race site drinking water along the way. Got set up in transition then walked 1 mile to the swim start.
Event warmup:

Got in water and swam some to loosen up and get used to the water.
Swim
  • 27m 46s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 41s / 100 yards
Comments:

When we were standing in the water waiting, the bottom had all kinds of algae growth on it and I commented that "I had never done a swim where it feels like I'm standing on carpet, and the guy next to me said, " I'm trying not to think about it!" :) The water is supposedly clean, though it did start to smell some as the swim went on. I guess us swimmers churned up the water more than it had been in awhile.
What would you do differently?:

MAYBE pushed a little harder but overall I was happy. I kept my stroke fluid and strong.
Transition 1
  • 02m 13s
Comments:

I set up transition in the dark since they didn't have much lighting so I didn't even think about my sunglasses and when I got to T1, I had to open my T-bag, find my glasses case, open it, then take my glasses out of the protective sleeve, then take off. Plus I went down the wrong aisle initially and had to double back to my bike.
What would you do differently?:

Triple check that I am completely set up. Practice walking in and out of transition to and from my bike which I usually do. I guess I was over confident since I have always found my bike.
Bike
  • 1h 11m 16s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 20.92 mile/hr
Comments:

I took the first lap at a comfortable hard pace and then on the second lap hit is a little harder. By the second lap, more bike traffic was out there due to the sprint triathletes being on the course, so I had to pass more riders. Overall the bike traffic was light and I was mostly able to go as fast as I wanted to.
What would you do differently?:

Go harder on the first lap.
Transition 2
  • 00m 53s
Comments:

This was a nice transition for me. I loosened my strap on my shoes coming into the bike dismount area and was able to move out quickly.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 51m 40s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 19s  min/mile
Comments:

Negative splited the run. One of the nicest run venues I have ever done.
What would you do differently?:

Run faster. I still had a kick at the end to out sprint someone to the finish. I would rather have been too worn out to sprint the finish.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, drank some water, ate a banana, some cookies, a banana nut muffin, half a can of Pepsi.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Training. I need to work on developing speed. Especially in the run.

Event comments:

This was a fun race! Great venue for all three legs. Well organized. They should probably have a pre-race meeting at a specific time to explain the wave starts since some people got confused. They also need security at the bike transition. It would have been way too easy for someone to go "bike shopping". No one was at the bike exit when I grabbed my bike to go home to verify that I was taking my bike and not some tricked out Cervelo with Zipp 1080's and a Powertap!

Course: Probably one of the most unique swim courses. We swam in a 40' wide canal through part of downtown Indy. Picture the famous Los Angeles water ways, only much smaller. The canal has sloped sides, a concrete bottom, and was about 4' deep. We swam the 1500 meters from point to point with a couple turns along the way.
