here's my top 5 reasons why I love my treadmill:

5. No mud/ice/snow to worry about.

4. No stray dogs. (I was bitten once at 5AM!)

3. I love the cushioned belt. It stops me from leaving potholes.

2. No small children at bus stops/innocent neighbors are subjected to my fat butt as I haul it around the neighborhood.

and the number 1 reason............

1. I don't have to worry about dressing for the weather; I can run NEKKID if I want to!

feel free to remind me of other reasons I love my treadmill, thanx

I wonder whether we will be seeing a photo of that in the Album section?

I prefer it myself, too. Unlike biking, running is kinda mindless--and perhaps you all saw my response where my mind does weird things like calculas and probability... When I'm on a treadmill, I plug in a book on tape and am transported from my analytical mindtrap!!

I'll take it hands down, anyday.

Agree with the not getting bitten aspect as well. Is nuiscance to have to carry maglite/pepperspray/whatever. The fear of creating potholes also has a certain ring of familiarity!!

good things about running on the treadmill:

5. I know at a glance what my pace is
4. I can see my reflection in the wall mirror which gives me the incentive to run faster and longer (to lose the pot and large posterior)
3. I can watch the latest developing news on the Martha Stewart saga on TV
2. plenty of room for water bottles on the console
1. there is always at least one young lady riding a stationary bike in front of me

Ok my turn to try:

5-a lovely concrete wall to stair at while listening to the tv1 foot away and to my left. No room to place it in front.

4-No excusses about time, can either go after the kids are in bed or wake up early...blah

3-I am a technoweinie. I love numbers and buttons, probably why I like my heart reat monitor so

2-Pride- I got the thing for free, but I will be damned if it just collects dust and cloths.

1-After a late night workout I get a burst of energy to log on and clean the house at the same time. Side benifit my wifes tolorance of my new obsesion taking up so much of my house work time.

Interestingly, I have never run on a treadmill, probably because I don't like to run. But I find being outside running is relaxing, even though my HR approaches 180, or I fell because I didn't see a curb, or similar. The treadmill just reminds me of a hamster wheel.

Oh my God!!!! I can't believe you guys would prefer to run on a belt.

Good Reasons for Running Outside:
1. Fresh Air
2. Sunshine (Vitamin D) to rid you of winter doldrums
3. Scenery--varied and different
4. Weather--varied and different
5. New and different running outfits
6. Real uphills and downhills

Reasons for Running Inside:
1. Icy conditions
2. Below 20 degrees with a -10 wind chill

In IA a treadmill is a winter necessity - but soon it will be back tot he nature trails. HOWEVER - one big reason to use the treadmill at the University of Dubuque where I have my day job. I love the treadmill at 11:30 a.m. when the women's varsity basketball team comes to the gym to work out ;-)

This is fun!
I prefer to run outdoors but winter keeps me in to a certain extent. I find that if I run on the treadmill too long, it is torture to adapt to running outside again. I feel like I haven't been running at all and am out of shape. This is what I have been doing for the past 3 weeks, and I hope not to run indoors again until next winter. The worst thing is having to pile on the clothes. I can't wait until shorts and t-shirt weather...about 3 months to go!!

no no no noooooo!!! I didn't say that PREFER the treadmill, just a few reasons why it's ok, totally in reply to Mike's rant about hating it! LOL It's all in your perspective. It'll be a horrible thing if you expect it to be, or a great thing if you expect it to be. Right now I am soooo happy that I have one to use, because without it I would not be running
