"As a point of interest...my wife asked me (since I'm a marathon finisher!) "what would those guys put in their personal water bottles?" Obviously everyone is different in the mix(s) they use but does anyone know for sure what these world class athletes use other than gatorade or any of the multiple electro-lite replacement drinks on the market?"

I would be interested in this information as well.  The "drinks" they make themselves where in unmarked contaniers.  I want to drink a 2:05 minute marathon....

I just saw the results for all the men marathoners- I didn't realize how many runners DNF'ed since NBC didn't show all that.

I would imagine they just got so far behind they stopped so they could recover quicker for their next race.

I just finally watched this last night.  I admit to recording the Olympics then watching it at my leisure 1 or 2 (or, um 4) days afterwards so I can fastforward through all the parts I don't want to watch.

I have to agree with at least one poster above.  Our US guys may have "run smart" and couldn't have predicted that fast a race.  But after awhile, if those guys aren't dying...THIS IS THE OLYMPICS PEOPLE!  Beat them or DNF trying!  If they had pushed it to try to catch up the last half and then DNF'ed because they gave it their all...I'm okay with that.  But to just run your predicted splits the WHOLE race?  Note that I am NOT advocating trying to keep up with that pace from the beginning...give them a chance to fall off the pace. But it's the same thing we saw in the women's marathon...everyone let one chick get away thinking, "she's going to fade".  And then she didn't.

There's a time to race your own race and there is a time to race the race you're in....

Oh, and the piece on de Lima was NUTS.  I can't believe NBC let that A-hole who attacked him speak his message on their coverage!  It's like...letting him WIN.
