Is anyone else completely and utterly disappointed that the bike was shortened to 39 miles. I really can't express how pissed I am...

I cannot believe that they will not let racers defer or transfer so that they can do a real 70.3 at another time.

Totally. I will NEVER do a race by Piranha Sports again. I (we) have all trained for 70.3 and now it's a 53.3. So incredibly lame.

I registered for this site just so I could also express my total frustration with Diamondman.  This combined with other smaller issues at earlier races of Neil's this summer, decides it for me too - no Piranha races for me next summer.  A 17 mile difference isn't even in the same ballpark.   So much for my first HIM distance... I've lost all anticipation and excitement for this coming Sunday.

And, yes, I also agree that the policy about deferrals, etc is such poor execution.  But, based on what I've seen from Piranha in the past I guess I shouldn't be surprised.

Completely agree with what's been said above. This will be my first and LAST Piranha-Sports race. It really ticks me off as well that on the home page and registration page it STILL says 56 mile bike. They are still allowing people to sign up (i just signed up over the weekend) under the false impression its a real 1/2 iron and 56 bike. Then you read the athlete guide and learn of the 39 mile bike. Of course, at that point ---- no refund, no race defer, no customer service whatsoever.

I'm with you, I'll show them my displeasure with my wallet by not doing another Piranha-Sports race. Maybe if Neil gets word of this thread and begins to realize the hit he's going to take next season, he may continue to 'find a way' to get that bike course back to 56 miles

How can you run a series of races for all these years as they have and not have no plan B and then just say 'our options were limited', 'thx for understanding'. Its like he thinks its not a big deal that the 1/2 iron distance race we all signed up for is no longer a 1/2 iron race.

Pissed is a kind word for what I am - I think that we should contact Piranha-Sports sponsors and let them know how unprofessionally this whole situation has been handled. I can't believe that the home page is still advertising this as a 56 mile bike race. I can't even begin to express my disappointment. You train for endless months, you pay all kinds of money for coaches and training schedules only to find out that you are almost completing your first 1/2 IM – oh yeah less 17 miles – oh well seems to be their attitude. I still can't believe that there is NOTHING that can be done about this. I know that I will never sign up for another Piranha-Sports event again!

I signed up about 2 weeks ago, I thought that was bad. But last weekend? So sorry man. I emailed this Neil guy and he said:

"It was an emergency bridge repair which we only heard about 3 weeks ago. We were hoping it would be done prior to race date."

If that was the case, why didn't they post 3 weeks ago that there was the potential that this race wasn't going to be a real HIM?! I suggest you all email him, and spread the word. I am 1 and done w/ Pirhana.

I have never been to a "support group", but this is what it must be like. It's comforting that we all have to suffer this disappointment together, if nothing else.

Hey guys --

I just forwarded this link to Neil. He literally got back to me in about 2 minutes. I am sure he is being inundated with emails and phone calls. I was happy for his quick response (below) and the somewhat hopeful news:

"We were hoping they would’ve finished the bridge in time.  However, there may be a change in news as I’m going to review once again the course with police, etc.  We’re scheduled to do this tomorrow night and will post if it’s back to everything.

So, just to calm everyone down in terms of thinking I tried to hide anything – we were working aggressively and hoping for bridge completion by then as it was indicated that there is that possibility."

Lets hope that things pull through. I don't mind if the course is short by a few miles, but I think that 17 is inexcusable given the time frame they knew about the bridge closure.

I do feel bad for expressing my negativity to Neil; I am sure its a lot harder being a RD than what most of us think and hearing negative feedback is never fun. But everyone keep their fingers crossed that Neil can work his magic!

Thanks for forwarding to Neil.  I wanted to but I had already complained to him about two other things this summer so I was tired of being "that guy."

I too am disappointed, especially since this half is a prep race for IMFL for me and my only 1/2 of the season, but I think we really need to understand all the facts before publicly crucifying Neil and Piranha.

Changing a course isn't that simple. They are permits to deal with as well as trying to manage 2 races, avoiding neighborhoods, volume across intersections etc. Granted it still sucks, esp. for those that signed up in the last couple weeks (myself included), when Piranha knew of a potential obstacle. Think of it this way, how would you feel if people bashed you on a website when something outside of your control causes you to not deliver something as promised?

Anyways, hopefully Neil can pull a rabbit out of the hat and get some more bike mileage for all of us. I really want to ride 56 on Sunday! Cya you all there!

-tim

PS - this is my 6th piranha race... and the first one with anything remote to a major issue. I sure I'll do more of their races on the future.

I'm no race director, but if there was a possibility that the bridge could be out, why no plan B??? Why not have a short delay between the sprint and HIM and do laps of the sprint corse? I know this may be boring but it can be 56 miles. I would rather do 4 laps of the sprint corse and do the 56 than the 17 mile short 39 mile corse he is currently offering. We are not talking 3000 people on the corse, philly had 2000+ on a 2 lap corse. How can 500 spread out over a sprint bike corse be crowded? He needs to do the right thing by his racers. Either get the corse to 56 miles, if not. Refund the entry or defer it to other pirahna races. if he doesn't, his sponsors should be contacted. Advise them that you won't support their product/service as long as they support piranaha.

Again, I 100% agree here. And as far as bashing Neil, it's not like he's running a charity here. He took our money, with the expectation that we would be racing a 70.3 mi HIM. I could see if this was a sprint, and they had to cut 4-5 miles off the bike for some reason, but since this was advertised as a HIM, there are certain expectations.

This may sound silly, but if you went to the grocery store and bought a dozen eggs, only to find out there were only 8, you would return them, no? A "dozen" eggs is 12, a "HIM" is 70.

My guess is this race isn't closed to traffic whereas Philly was.

Anyways, cya all there on Sunday. Race hard and have fun!

Does anyone know if onsite signup is available tomorrow?  The website seems to say conflicting things.

I'm betting it's available. The "Registration is closed" line is where the active.com link used to be, so I say it's online registration is closed. Later in the page you see..

"If you still want to race and haven't signed up, click on pdf logo above, print out, and bring with you to race site all filled out.

You may sign up in person the day before from 1 to 4pm only. There will be LIMITED race morning registrations allowed."

Please let us know how it works out. My friend and I decided it was too risky for the swim to be canceled, and I stayed home and trashed my legs with a nice workout. Might go for SavageMan.
