Subject: Question about a bike

Hey everybody, thanks in advance for advice / info.  I'm looking at getting a new bike for Some upcoming Tri's and Du's... at the moment the s32 Felt is what I've had my eye on, however, a friend of a friend is selling a 1998 Gt Edge time trial bike. It has spinergy carbon fiber wheels and some other add ons.

The difference is in the price. I'm not opposed to paying for the Felt, but I was wondering if any of you guys could give any information on the Edge (I can get it for $500)... I can't find much online.  Again thanks in advance.

The Edge was a pretty sweet bike back in teh day, but when you factor in 10yo components, and wheels that have been known to fail catastrophically, it makes it less of a deal.

I don't think I would pay $500 for any 10 year old bike. That is just me.  To much technology change in that amount of time.

Go for the Felt or look for a newer used bike.

As for the Spinergy wheels: what model of Spinergy wheels? I'm assuming run4yrlif's comment is directed at some of their older 4-spoke wheelsets, but I understood that their reputation for spontaneously exploding was only with earlier models, the later models being less-prone to failure. The wheelset could also be newer Spinergys, of which they make some fine product.

As for paying for a bike with older componentry, is the bike original, or have there been upgrades? And what are these other "add-ons"?  For reference, I just sold a 1999 Giant road bike in tri configuration, base training wheels and a complete 8 year old Ultegra gruppo for $600, with a few additional "add-ons" (like a double wireless computer) and there was much interest at that price.
