Subject: Need Opinion On This Bike
I was at Performance Bike on Sunday to get some mtn bike parts and noticed this road bike http://www.performancebike.com/shop/profile.cfm?SKU=5813&subcategor... for $1699. I have been thinking of buying a road bike for a while but haven't really got into checking too much out yet but this one caught my eye. I picked it up out of the rack and it is very light and the quality looks top notch. I have not heard of Scattante before and was wondering if there are any horror stories about this brand? I did sit on a size 58 and it seemed ok but a little stretched out (I am 5-10 with a 33" inseam, so long legged) the next size down is a 55 which I would obviously try also. I have also looked at Fuji bikes but they seem to be quite a bit more expensive for the same level of components then the Scattante.

This bike if it fits properly seems like a good deal, what do you think, or do you recommend something else in the under $1700 price range?

I have the 2003 version, and love it. It is a massed produced Taiwanese frame. I bought it as a frame set(no longer an option) and it has a different geometry, but should be similar quality. Go with the smaller size. you can put on a longer seatpost, but being stretched out will kill you back.

I'm 5'10" with a 31v inseam, and the 56 is a little long in the TT.

I'd get this:

http://www.bikesdirect.com/products/kestrel/evoke.htm

Better parts spec and a much better frame, for essentially the same price (when you consider the free shipping and no sales tax).

Not a whole lot in your post about why you would choose a road bike versus a tri bike, so there may be considerations I'm missing. But...

If I was getting into triathlons and had $1700 to spend, I would give serious consideration to the Cervelo P2SL Ultegra .

Well, if you don't have a problem with the bike name starting with "SCAT"...

Seriously, though, there's probably nothing wrong with the bike, as long as it fits you and your purpose.

Please humor me as I am new to road bikes but, how can you tell that the frame and components are better on this bike and what makes them better. It looks like a nice bike to be honest better then the Scattante, just not a lover of red.

Well I would like to ride on group rides with some friends who ride road bikes also it's very hilly where I ride and I understand that tri geometry doesn't lend itself to a lot of hill riding. Also seems a road bike would be more versatile. I am also thinking about entering a local road race next year (Redlands Classic) in the old mans race.

I agree with The Bear on this one. If you do some shopping around you're likely to find some good deals this time of year.

Kestrel has been making carbon frames since carbon frames were made..they are generally regarded to be, if not the best in the business, very, very near the top.

Contrast that with the Scattante, which is a just a generic carbon frame.

As for the components, the Scattante has an inferior wheelset and a host of house-brand components that, IMO, aren't in the came class as the Ritchey WCS components on the Kestrel. Also, the Scattante has a downgraded cassette and brake calipers.

A couple more options:

Ok thanks, you've convinced me, I also like that they are made in CA. Now I have to convince the wife what a great deal this is.
