Pro 3730 NorCal | Subject: IMKY stomach issues Any other IMKY people battling stomach issues? Mine started at mile 5-6 on the bike on sunday and I'm still having problems today! It's not a running to the bathroom type issue, just a lot of discomfort and not being able to eat. I'm chewing TUMS like they are going out of style, anyone else battling stomach demons? I'm guessing it's from the river???? |

Expert 924 Louisville, KY | Subject: RE: IMKY stomach issues I had a problem at about the 1 hour mark on the bike ride. However, on Friday's practice swim I took in a HUGE gulp of river water and didn't have any problems afterward. Plus, my problems subsided as soon as I settled down after the race. I'm pretty much completely back to normal at this point. Sorry to hear that you are still suffering a bit. |

New user 45 | Subject: RE: IMKY stomach issues I'm good, but I noticed a lot of people having problems during the run. I had 2 pepto tabs but never had to use them. But I could start a thread about the challenge of walking up stairs |

Extreme Veteran 550 Vine Grove, KY | Subject: RE: IMKY stomach issues I'm back to normal now with my appetite and everything. I had significant cramping for the first 80 miles on the bike, and then they amazingly went away. Had been feeling nauseous when I ate until this morning. Good as new now. Thinking about doing a sprint on Sunday as long as my quads continue to improve. |

Champion 10157 Alabama | Subject: RE: IMKY stomach issues Sorry to hear you have a rumbly in your tumbly. I drank some of the Ohio River but not enough to brag about. I did have a minor issue with gas though. Prolly from all the dang powerbars and gels. I was not going to mention this 'gas issue' but you pulled it out of me....uh, so to speak. It was not a big problem but a very audible one. And when the course is lined with spectators and runners, it's hard to find any solitude to lower the internal system pressure. If you know what it sounds like when your running! So I told myself, "Well, that's ok....I'm just an anomomous runner among 2000 other runners." But then I had to laugh thinking "Oh yeah, 6'3" 250 lbs guy in a damn florescent yellow shirt running along farting with every step....yeah, I blend!" I'm sure on my second loop people were like "Hey look, here comes the glow-in-the-dark-fart machine!" OK, I've embarrassed myself telling this story....anyone have a bag I can put over my head? ~Mike |

Champion 5615 | Subject: RE: IMKY stomach issues I had stomach problems from hour 5 on the bike, until the end of the run. I think I came up with the best analogy for the day. It was like racing in an Easy-Bake Oven. Not hot enough that you burn yourself, but after 5 hours, you are thoroughly cooked. |

Mostly on the run, but a couple of times on the bike too. |

Champion 8540 the colony texas | Subject: RE: IMKY stomach issues Same here Abbie.. I had some major stomach issue's on the bike, I thought it was due to a horrible headache that wouldn't go away, but even today I just don't want to eat and when I do I still get that feeling that it's coming back up |

Veteran 321 Georgia | Subject: RE: IMKY stomach issues I have not thrown up since mile 14 on the run. I have swum in the Thames before with no known effects, so I had some solace going into the Ohio. I got a few good tastes of the river, though and would describe it as full-bodied, rather earthy and musty with a fresh start and slightly corked finish. It was not the best water I have had nor the worst. I hope you all get to feeling better. Edited by cwsiii 2008-09-03 1:41 PM |

Champion 10471 Dallas, TX | Subject: RE: IMKY stomach issues Well Abbie, don't you have nervous stomach issues...anyways? I'm not sure you can lay the blame of your tummy issues on the river. Honestly, I think the heat got a lot of us out there. Just like IMAZ in April. Heat + racing = vomiting, or feeling like it. My stomach stopped being happy at mile 80 on the bike. I just backed off my nutrition some and backed off my effort level as well. This helped me to not vomit, but my stomach was also not 100%. When I hit the run, it was all I could do to eat. I was so scared of vomiting. I knew that once that started, the race would go downhill, so I held strong. I took in gels, coke and water. But my nutrition was nothing like it was in training, it was a lot less. After the race, I couldn't get a bite. Then, when I did want to eat, I felt like vomiting still. That lasted until around 3:00 PM on Monday. Finally I got a good amount of food in my tummy on Monday around 6:00 PM and felt OK. I don't think it was the river. I think it was just the heat and exertion levels we were putting out. |

Veteran 248 Mooretown, Ontario Canada | Subject: RE: IMKY stomach issues Oh, don't worry Mike, I had similar issues and I was wearing a Canadian Flag shirt that stood out also. I ran into a porta john for a pee and let one I had been holding for a while that was so loud it scared me. When I came out, everyone at the aid station was staring at me. I just laughed and said, "too much gatorade" and started running again. FishHog |

Master 1219 Sachse | Subject: RE: IMKY stomach issues I swallowed a very little bit of water.. but I don't think that was my issue. I had quite a bit a gas through the entire bike and most of the run. It was bad enough I kept looking behind me until the second loop on the bike, before I let it go.. lol.. I wanted to make sure I didn't hook up any of the hot TRI women..... could care less about the guys.. There were points that i was actually going to stop, but I kept putting it out of my head. I finally had to make a stop coming back on the first loop of the run. Which brings me to another "lessons leaned". If you wear OOMPH shorts that have the gell flask holders and such.... if you have to pull them down for what ever reason, secure the flasks first. I dropped 2 flasks with 20+ dollars of Roctane on the floor of the porta john. Looking at the floor in that thing... I don't think washing it off was going to work. All these issues cleared the next afternoon. kenny |

Bob 2194 Binghamton, NY | Subject: RE: IMKY stomach issues amymengel - 2008-09-03 3:09 PM I guess I was lucky. No tummy issues at all. I think I was lucky the entire race. You are a machine Amy!! I am bowing to you! Abby, I took in 2 mouthfuls of the Ohio and threw up 4 or 5 times during the swim. I stayed away from solids on the bike for the first hour and then had no problems until a few miles into the run. My stomach finally feels back to normal today. The Tum's you gave me around mile 19 or so was my saving grace. I was able to run the last few miles with Brandon and felt like I could have gone on for another 10 miles at that point. I don't know if it was the river or not but my stomach definitely didn't like what I swallowed during that swim. |

Damn...those things get HHHOOOOTTTTTT! |
