Subject: Repair Stands (Carbon Aero Frames)

I just purchased a P2C and quickly discovered I need a new repair stand owing to the fact that there is no place (Safe) to clamp onto it. A lot of stands I have seen (Made for Carbon Frames) clamp onto the Seat Tube but this is not an option for the P2C since it is an aero shaped carbon tube.

I have found one stand out there made by Park City that supports the bike with a QR clamp on the front forks and a support for the Bottom Bracket but it is Ubber Pricey

I will definitely suck it up and get the Park City if there is nothing else but am hoping there is something out there that is cheaper.

Any ideas????

I don't have a solution, but I have the same problem.  This is my way of making sure I see any responses.

Do you know where the "unsafe" line is, in terms of clamping pressure on a carbon top tube?  Is there one?

My company manufactures plastic shelving, and I was thinking about just making my own stand with one of our benches, a fork clamp, and a moveable block to go under the BB.  Functionally, its the same as the park stand, but it also includes a shelf for parts and tool.

Then again, the park stuff folds up so nicely, you can take it anywhere ....

Given that the tolerance for the various bolts on my carbon frame is 5-7 newton-meters, I would guess that is the tolerance on the frame for a repair stand as well.  I doubt anyone is going to bolt on a frame to a stand anywhere near that pressure.

My issue with my old stand had more to do with the shape of the bracket.  It was an older model, and worked well on round metal frames.  But my new stand is an Ultimate Pro-ultralight.  It folds nicely, and supports the bike from underneath.  The way the bracket screws into place feels secure on the carbon frame both in terms of shape and also the pressure.  The best part was I got it for $40 at an REI garage sale since the original owner couldn't figure out how to use the hinge arm that supports the bike!

That type of stand is pricy, but if you cannot clamp on the seat post, than it is cheaper thana new frame. When i was at he road worlds in Canada, I met a race mechanic, that swore by that type of repair stand, as it raised the bike higher, he was able to tune and clean the bike faster.

if you are just looking for a stand to do some light maintenance and cleaning.  Then just use your regular stand.  Just hang the bike by the nose of the seat on the arm.  That is what I do.  If you need to do something where you need some stability, put it in the trainer (if you don't have one here is your excuse).  I remember reading where Rick (Daeremo does his bike maintenance in his trainer currently).

You can clamp onto the seat post as well.  I just prefer having the bike held by the top tube. It seems more stable to me that way. And I agree with the mechanic - cleaning the bike is quick on the stand.  I gave my bike its weekly love today after my ride (washing and waxing the frame, thorough cleaning and lubing of drive train, brightening the tires) and was done within 15 minutes or so. And like I said, keep an eye out at REI and you get stuff on the cheap - the new stand was in new condition, 75-80% off retail.

It's the same as the park tool stand and for $150 I'd like the peace of mind.

I just got this one and seems good so far.  Easy enough to use and bike seems solid in there.

Awesome, that is exactly what I was looking for

Performance recently purchased the LBS in my town and have been clearing out all of the old stores inventory. I went there but they only had a few Park City models left but nothing that looked like this.

I think I am going to order it online assuming the Shipping costs are not too crazy.

A way to lower the shipping cost is to have it shipped to the store.  Commonly the local Performance stores will run a weekly lunch special whereby you get an additional discount (here it is every Tuesday between 12:00-2:00 pm for an additional 10% off) ... add this to the 10% in points you get from being a Performance Team member and you automatically get it for 80% of listed price.
