Subject: Ever get hit for an illegal bike?
As I was getting my bike into the transition area yesterday(sprint race), a "tech" inspector stopped me and told me it was illegal.  It's just a P3 with the standard bullhorn aero bar setup, etc, etc..that was when I noticed that everyone else was riding road bikes with little bitty clip on aero bars.  So at the last minute I had to have my wife run and grab my road bike (which had not been prepped at all) so that I could get it in to the box just before the race started.  Not a good way to start the day.  My question is:  Is it common in the states to have "tech" inspections before a race?

It sounds like this was a draft legal race. In those, you're not allowed to have aero bars that extend past the brake hoods.

Were you allowed to draft?

We typically don't have draft legal races state side.

If it was not a draft legal race, than no its not typical to have rules on ok bikes other than no recumbent and you must have bar ends covered.

Similar thing happened at a race last month. They were training new usat officials and they were looking for stickers but some of the helmets had their approval printed out Folks that helmets said were approved they were telling them they couldn't race..it was a big mess as they did it to everyone and it sucked up a lot of time.

Did she say what was illlegal about your bike?

I see it all the time at USCF cycling races. No bar end plugs and, at one race, they pulled a guy out who didn't have a sleeved jersey. He was pretty PO'ed about it and DNS'ed because the jersey wasn't legal. It's in the rules though...

I have had 1-2 Tri's (USAT registered ones) where they take my bike from me entering transition set up and check the brake performance, look it over and hand it back. No more than a 5 second look over.

Yes, it was, as pretty much every race here is, draft legal.

So I've got $4500 worth of tri bike that I can't use for local races...

They were also checking bar end plugs and helmets.  I guess I will need to find my some itty bitty aero bars and figure out how to check the rules for the races over here.  Thanks.

Now, checking for bar ends plugs is very normal. Just an FYI.

Sure you can...you just need a UCI-legal cockpit.
