Total Time = 1h 48m 19s
Overall Rank = 118/573
Age Group = Clydes +
Age Group Rank = 1/15
Pre-race routine:

Drove to work
Set up bike like a for an AM ride
Ride down Venice Blvd to T1
Event warmup:

Sat on the beach and watched 7-8 waves go and come back in .
Ate a light breakfast .
Swim
  • 16m 12s
  • 644 meters
  • 02m 31s / 100 meters
Comments:

Our wave was small so i started at the back For some reason no one took the inside line so i did . A big breaker came in as we hit 3-4 foot water so i dove under and was swimming after that. By the first buoy our group was all spread out so very little fighting for position went on.
What would you do differently?:

DO more of the swim freestyle
Transition 1
  • 02m 33s
Comments:

I had a fantastic racking spot right by the swim entrance
1st/15
What would you do differently?:

Leave the HR monitor behind , i dont really need it at this stage and it does take 5-10 secs to put on. Tape Gels to my bike .
Bike
  • 58m 9s
  • 19.3 miles
  • 19.91 mile/hr
Comments:

Had a fun time riding the new course
its a little shorter than last year but with more rollers so the legs were fresher throughout. I loved this bike course . Passed Tons
Got passed once . Nothing gets me going faster than passing
folks in expensive bikes with aero helmets... :)
The pavement section on Wilshire was in a very sorry state of repair . Other
than that it was pretty good .
What would you do differently?:

Not ride so much the week of a race ... I did 1 long ride too many this week.

Small pet peeve , why do people feel like they have to ride on the left when they are not passing ?
Transition 2
  • 02m 1s
Comments:

RAn in the bike shoes pretty good , passed a few more after the bike dismount line
I knew i was doing good because our rack had only 1 bike on it . :)
So it was very easy to spot my BAg with shoes race belt and water in it.
What would you do differently?:

Perfect
3rd/15
Run
  • 29m 26s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 09m 28s  min/mile
Comments:

Its tough to run when you are tired , its hot and the course is uphill , but i made a decent effort and felt strong . My last mile was the fastest 8:20 , Why cant i hit that 8 min pace from the get go ?
Yeah i know its uphill and the legs are like jello...
What would you do differently?:

I need to get back to speed workouts .
Post race
Warm down:

Well I stayed after to refuel , there was lots of food and water , they set up a nice misting area and then i got in line for a massage . That was awsome and worth the 45 min wait . Found the beer garden and enjoyed a cold Brew. The Awards started and guess what ... i placed First out of 15 in super Clydes ... i had a good race so that did not change anything \

but its always cool to get hardware

Overall I placed 118 th out of 573 folks for the sprint so not too shabby .

I rode back to the car after the race down Venice it was windy and warm at 2pm , i seem to stop at every traffic light which made the trip feel longer

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Weight and more speed training in the pool and on the track.

Event comments:

It was great to race this one again and the new sections on the bike course were really fun with a ton of rollers . The pavement on Wilshire was disastrous . The swim iN and Out were finally clearly separated like it should have always been . T2 and Finish area were Great and I placed in the sprint so I had a good day.

Could not buy a bus tix at the expo so ended up ridding back down Venice after the race.

I hear you on the riding left. I know the roads sucked but I saw plenty of people left , there were a lot of fast racers, you're taking your life into your own hands when you do that. Nice race .

Ditto on the road conditions. I prayed every time I hit a pot hole that was unavoidable, yikes.

Very exciting to place!  Sounds like you had everything under control.  I think you were pretty well prepared; you've been training very consistently for quite a while.  No need for speed work til very late next spring--put it on the calendar so you don't forget!

Way to go!

Nice race, and congrats on the podium finish (again)!  I also enjoy passing people in their fancy aero helmets and race wheels...
