Pre-race routine:

This was supposed to be a bike/run biathlon, but Hurricane Ike blessed the midwest with driving rain and flash flooding. I got up and drove down to see the bike course, which was under 6 inches of water. Learned they would try to have the 5k. Went home, ate toast with pb, had cup of coffee, talked to some others who were debating whether to run or not.
Event warmup:

Had to park a couple of blocks away, jogged over to the start wearing a big garbage bag to keep dry for a bit. Pouring down rain and the wind was picking up. Everyone was huddled under an open-sided tent. there was lightning. I can't believe the race was not called. These were terrible conditions. STretched a bit.

Comments:

I am a slow runner but truly thought this would be my day to break 30 minutes on a 5K. I'm not going to beat myself up for not achieving the goal, but I am disappointed. It did seem, though, that times were down uniformly, and I beat a couple of gals who usually come in ahead of me.
What would you do differently?:

Bagged this race. Not worth it. I like to run in the rain as much as the next person, but this was different. Even a little scary. I remember at one point seeing someone's American flag whipping violently and thinking it was going to be destroyed.

This will be a great race, I feel bad for the organizers that the weather screwed things up.

First mile 9:54. Wind was behind us. Turned and we were running into the wind. Very difficult. My HR hovered around 170.
Course: Flat, lots of turns that went through a residential area. Streets were flooded. It was hard to run in the puddles, so runners, myself included, would run on the sidewalks which were up higher. But eventually those were just as flooded, so gravitated back to the road. The last half mile was completely flooded, 3-4" of water everywhere.
