I always go out way too fast, way off my normal training runs. If you throw up after you cross the finish line you know you didn't leave anything on the course.

Ok, I finished the race.  It went pretty well, except I am disappointed with my own heart rate effort.

I felt like I didn't push my heart/lungs as hard as I could have.  My legs (calves and achilles) were my limiting factor in "pushing it"...not my heart.

Anyways, here are my results:

Mile 1 - 9:35 min/mile    (148 HR avg(starting with 9,000 other people leads to a slow start)

Mile 2 - 8:48  (159 HR avg)

Mile 3 - 8:38  (162 HR avg)

My overall time for the 5k was 27:52 with a ~8:58 min/mile, and a 156 avg HR.

I'm happy with my time, since it's my first race, and it's much faster than I have been practicing, but like I said, I'm not happy/confident that my avg HR was truly my Lactate Threshold.  That means I'll probably need to go out and do another test to find that sometime.  Bummer.  My legs need to HTFU.

Nice work - this week - later in the week, you could try 4x5' at 160 HR w/1 minute rest - see if you can maintain the pace and HR throughout.

Nice race and good pacing...this morning I made the mastake of taking out the 1st mile a little too fast and was running alone most of the race. The front back left me pretty quick and I was out in no man's land.

Congrats on the race!

-My heart rate was in the 190's......yeah it hurt.

You did good for you first 5k.  Everyone has to start somewhere.  Keep up the training and you'll improve.

HR should be able to get higher than that in a 5k.

But that will come in time! Just keep it up!

Yea, my legs are still weenie.  I've been swimming/biking for a few months now (so aerobically I am ok), but just started onto the running scene a month ago or so.

Got a few more planned this fall, with a potential quarter marathon in late November.  Definitely enjoying it and plan to keep up the training.

Thanks to everyone for the kind words, support and advice through this thread.

Great first 5K. Must have felt good to finish strong. You must be looking forward to the next one.
Good job.
