I bought 2 new tires and 2 new tubes for my roadbike a couple months ago. About 3 weeks ago, I had to buy a new pump, 'cause my Planet Bike ST Floor pump had something wrong with it. Air would come out of the schrader valve while the presta valve would be in use. I bought a Joe Blow Sport floor pump to replace it, and then the same happened again this morning (air coming out the schrader valve while I was pumping the presta valve tube up. As a side note, my rear tire is extremely difficult to check/inflate. I've tried not pushing down all the way with the head on the valve, all the way down, and barely on. I usually deflate the tire just so I can get an accurate read! So either this valve is what screwed up my pumps, or I'm putting the head of the pump on wrong. This make any sense to anybody? Is my pump repairable, or is a seal screwed up?

I had a hard time getting used to the presta valve and pumping.  Are you using the little lever handle on the inflator? It should be parallel to the hose when you're inserting the valve.  Then, turn it away from the opening.  Make sure it's all of the way on the presta valve before turning the handle.

I also feel I need to let out a little bit of air on one of my tires, I don't know why that is.  You'll get the hang of it eventually.  I had to call my bike shop when I first got tires with a presta valve and admit defeat.  They talked me through it

Yeah, I'm leaving it parallel when inserting it, then turning it to the correct option. It's just strange that it happened to two pumps, one right after the other, after 2 years of pumping up tires with no problem! I think I'm gonna replace the junky tube with one thats got a better valve.

I'll be the guy that asks the obvious.  Are you opening the Presta valve before attaching the pump?  If you're having problems, let a little air out before attaching the pump to make sure the valve is not jammed.

Presta valves can be funny sometimes.  If your tire is at 100 PSI for example, it often times can be hard to add more air.  The pump has to overcome the back pressure from the inflated tire before any goes in.  Like the previous poster suggested, let some out before trying to inflate it to the required PSI.  I've had this happen with various pump brands over the years.  I have a Joe Blow of some sort (I don't remember the model) and I have to do this.

Yup, I'm opening the valve before attaching the head.

Heh, I definitely remember trying to pump my first Presta valve.  I'd never seen one before, and was used to the Schrader valves that you just push the nozzle on and start pumping.

It took me awhile (and may or may not have taken a phone call to a friend) to figure out to open the presta valve.  Embarassed

Is it happening with the new tubes?  Maybe the problem is in the tube/valve, not the pump, since you replaced the pump. Try the pump on someone else's tires and see if the problem still exists.

The front and rear tubes are different on the bike, front one worked fine and filled up fine. But now, since the pump messed up, now it makes an air leak noise on the front tube as well.

Bummer...

Go find a machine screw threaded the same as the schrader valve and insert it into the schrader side of the pump head.  A quick wrap of packing tape to keep it from becoming a 100+ psi air-launched projectile and you shouldn't be leaking any more air out the schrader side.

Agreed that prestas are quirky. One thing I always do is "tap" down the presta valve once its unscrewed, just to loosen it a bit. Then I push the pump head onto the valve...and make sure it seats good on there..and that I get a pressure reading on the pump gauge before clamping it in place, and that tells me that the head is securely on there and the valve has opened. Then its good to go.
