Subject: CO2 cartridges...
ok, after scaring the #$% out of myself, I realized I am clueless on how to use CO2 cartrideges. First time I tried while throwing a new wheel on my trainer (while practicing as to be faster during a race should I flat), I finally got it screwed on to the adaptor, felt the adapter get really cold, heard the tube inflating, then ........KABLAM!!!!! It blew a hole the size of a pencil eraser in the tube. Patched the tube...Attempt #2 results: See attempt #1....ended up with a tube with two patches and Whisper, my year old Weimar, shaking from the explosions.....

Can you control the rate it goes in? Can you shut it off? What gives????

Some help please....Thx....Scott

Some inflaters come with a trigger, but seems to me that the problem is with your tube (or installation thereof), not the rate of inflation.

I guess a question I should have asked was, is one whole cartridge the right amount for a tube or is it too much? Tire says 130 psi, but I never go that high...usually 110...

12g will get you to 90 psi or so, 16g will get you ~120.

Neither should blow a hole in your tube without additional cause.

Where are the holes?  Sounds like something in your tire or maybe bad rim tape somewhere.

They do make different sized cartridges - 16 gram and a second, smaller size (12gram) for road tires (25 gram for the off roaders). The only difference is the resultant tire pressure. If I recall correctly, the 16 gram will result in a tire pressure around 120 (on a 700 sized tire). The smaller one about 100'ish, subject to proper operation...

ETA: too late...the Bear jumped on this one already.

You need to twist the cartridge snug then slowly twist the cartridge back.....That's the key !

I've never experienced a blow-out using a CO2 cartridge. I'd suggest racing with CO2 and training with a mini pump. Your LBS could probably show you where you went wrong with the CO2 cartidge.

I was actually just practicing using the CO2 to simulate doing it during a race. I do use the mini pump normally for the trainer...

I think I know where it went bad....I had always inflated the tube slightly while getting it seated properly. I remember reading to do that years ago when I first started riding. I guess by doing so I might have gone well past 130psi when i used the 16g CO2...
Wheel tape is good. No problems with this wheel before now...Likely just operator error.
Thanks for the input...I'll give it another go tonight.

I have not used a cartrige yet (I have them on my bike but have not practiced with them yet).  But I was going to ask if you had started with some air in the tube before you started?  I would suspect this could have been the issue.

I understand that you should be able to stop the air by tightening the cartrige (all the way back into the adaptor) at partial inflation if you need to also.

Not sure if that's possible.  I use 16 gram c02 for my 700's, and dump the entire thing in.  (you are supposed to).  I don't think you can even get to 130psi if you tried.  Not enough gas.

BTW, since MTB bike tires are bigger, but run less pressure, they ALSO take all 12 grams.

This comming from the LBS when I asked a long time ago how to opperate.  They said use 16 gram, and dump it all in there in one shot.

Sounds like a different problem to me.
