To All!!!

I am signed up for IMKY2009 and now need a training schedule. Should I buy one here on BT.com, should I use the free one on BT.com, should I go out and drop $540 on MarkAllenOnline.com? What is everyone else doing? Is it worth shelling out another $500 for a training program?

I've raced this entire season as a member of the MAO elite triathlon team (although most of the team is way more "elite" than me). I can honestly say that this has been my best tri season ever with 2 overall wins, 5 top 3 overall finishes and a few more AG 1st place finishes. The training plans that they develop are relentlessly consistent and will definitely get you ready for whatever race you're training for. You also get unlimited email interaction with the head coach (Luis) who is very knowledgeable and has lots to offer.

This arrangement was just right for me in that it was just the right level of interaction. Obviously a more personal relationship with an established coach is likely to cost more than this (although exceptions do exist), but ultimately you have to decide what you want out of the coaching relationship.

I used Be Iron Fit by Don Fink.  Easy to read, to the point information, and it had three 30 week plans to choose ranging from Just Finish to Competitive.  I would check it out at the bookstore before you drop the $$$ you mentioned.  I did IMKY this year and felt great when I got done.  I plan on using the Competitive plan for IMKY 2009.

 Good luck in your journey.

My buddy is using MA online for his first IM (FL).  I peek at his training plan every week or so and this week (5 weeks out from the race) it had him doing 21+ hours.  He's a 40-year-old w/ a law practice & 4 kids who did a 6:30 HIM in May.  Now, I'm sure that 20+ hour weeks would get him ready for an IM....IF there was any chance in hell he had the time to actually do it...which he doesn't.

Hope this helps.

It all comes down to what you are looking for. Do you need accountability, a plan, a sounding board?

The nuts and bolts of Ironman are pretty simple. Lots of S/B/R, but actually doing it and feeling like you are doing it right is what can get complicated.

Ask yourself what are you looking for and then the amount of $ you spend will make sense.

for less money, and better training in my option. Check out the ironman plans at Ironguides.com, I have been extremely happy with their plans and such. Very effective.

What ever it takes to get you out the door is what will work best.  Peak through the logs of the people on these boards and I think you will see the greatest correlation between hours logged and speed of standard race distances as opposed to what plan is followed.   You want a sub 5 hr half, think 12-15 hours a week,  you want a 6 hour half, think 5-10 hours.  Of course natural talent and experience is a factor, but no plan will change that.  Read a book or two, talk to people on these boards and get on the roads - you'll do just fine.

For IMFL 2008, I bought a 15 dollar book at Barnes and Noble bookstore- "Start to Finish Ironman Training 24 Weeks to an Endurance Triathlon" Its written by Paul Huddle and Roch Frey. Its simple, easy to understand, and gets to the point. It has graphs with daily workouts, plus a section that explains each workout in detail. I feel like my training is going well... we will know for sure on November 1st.

I used Mark Fitz's training plan books thru Tri magazine for my first tri, Vineman HIM, and will use it this season for both HIM's as well.

It was good enough for what I wanted to do, I don't have the liquid funds to drop much money on stuff outside the necessities of this unnecessary sport, fulltime student with two kids doesn't give you much liquid income.

Unless something changes I will use the same books to put a plan together for my full IM debut in 2010.
