Subject: aero wheel question
What is the difference between hed jet 60 and 90, or Blackwell research 50mm and 100mm, or Zipp 404 and 808?  I know it means how deep the carbon goes into the wheel, but really what is the difference?  Are the deeper wheels better like the Hed Jet 90 is better than the 60 or is it a preference thing?   They all seem to run about the same price whether they are the more shallow or the deeper wheels.  So what are the reasons to choose one over the other.  Can someone explain this to me?

Mainly the deeper, the more aero. Disc > Zipp 1080 > Blackwell 100 > etc However the deeper the wheel, the harder it will be to control or handle in cross winds.

So, is one better than the other.  The deeper (100mm) or the shallower (50mm)? Or are they just different and how do you choose which ones you should be racing on? Or what is going to be the fastest?

I've got to think some of it is finding your comfort zone between aero and comfort in dealing with cross-winds.

if your on a low budget  and there is not too much of a change between the two wheels go with the one with better control (shorter carbon), but if your rich go ahead and buy 'em both and switch them throughout race conditions. Better fast then wobbly...safe then sorry.

Generally, aero trumps weight with tri bikes.  And 10mm more of carbon rim doesn't add a lot of weight.

Even on mountainous stages of professional bike races many of the riders are now opting for deep sectioned wheels rather than ultra lightweight, but less aerodynamic wheels.

I've been amazed at how well my Blackwell 100's handle in crosswinds. I mean you still notice a difference, but it's hardly a big issue. I recommend them highly.
