Subject: Sugar-No More! Help Needed

I have just realized the amount of refined sugar I am ingesting and it is way too high! I don't eat candy or desserts but between protein bars, cereal and other 'unsuspected' foods, I am getting in WAY too much sugar. I want to stop or severly limit my refined sugar intake. I rely on protein bars for my source of protein mainly due to convenience. I can't find any bars that don't have a lot of sugar. I really don't care about taste. High amounts of protien was my big concern. Good taste usually means high sugar. I started eating protein bars when they were barely ingestable so the sugar content is my only concern, not taste.

Now, the reason for this post......Does anybody know of any bars, or powders, that are known for their lack of sugar?? Any other sugar reduction will be appreciated.

Thanks, Jeff

What do you mean by "refined sugar"? White sugar? I believe that the Cliff, Luna and GO Lean brands are all natural. By this, they use cane juice, fruit juice, rice syrup ect to sweeten their foods. Don't know if that helps, but it was worth a shot.

Uses brown sugar...you might be able to use honey or agave to sweeten instead...

Sugar, refined or naturally occurring, is treated the same by your body because it is chemically the same. That being said, you require (here it goes) NO SUGAR in your daily diet because it is possible to hit your daily required amount of carbs with starches alone...... Focus on keeping your carb/protein ration where you need it to manage your diet and weight. Hope that helps..

I am in the same boat.

However, I like Syntrax Nector Lattes (Cappuccino Flavor).  Each "scoop" ~ 1/4 cup provides 23g protein.  No carbs/no caffeine.

Stick two scoops in the blender with skim milk and four ice cubes, and you have a decent tasting mocha milkshake, and your daily requirement for protein.

Thanks for the reply's. Boat Mon is right. I am trying to eliminate ALL sugars after I realized how much I was taking in. I also have been reading a lot about the effect sugar has on the body in relation to endurance training, insulin levels and fat retention.

Again, I am not a sugar eater but I was taking in well over 100 grams per day. My protein bar of choice, MetRx Big 100 Colossal bar has 27 grams of sugar which almost equals 7 teaspoons of sugar (1 teaspoon of sugar equals 4 grams)! I would average 3 of these bars a day. No wonder it tastes so damn good. I eat a local brand of Fiber cereal. It tastes like sh*t AND it has 5 grams of sugar per serving, which is low compared to the real sugar cereals like Frosted Flakes and Apple Jacks.

Power Bars, Slim Fast, Snack Wells.........all have a lot of sugar and I am trying to eliminate it. I know I won't 100% eliminate it completely but this goal will keep my consumption low.

Thanks again, Jeff

A great source of protein is Whey Protein.  I use EAS brand chocolate flavor ( I get it at BJ's food warehouse ). You get like 23 g. of protein per serving.

I usually will blend it with Fat free milk & A banana or frozen blueberries. YUM !  These taste great after a hard work out. You can also add it to a bowl of plain oatmeal. It takes a few minutes to stir it in but makes it taste almost like a chocolate oatmeal cookie!

Good Luck and good eats!
