What Rick (daremo) said...

Honestly, seeing cyclists heading at me when I'm riding (i.e., when they're going against traffic in a bike lane or along the curb) makes me nuts. I was ready to throw an elbow at one guy who forced me out into the flow of traffic where I didn't need to be and knock him onto the sidewalk.

I have a problem with this where I ride.  There is a older lady that rides on the left side of the road on her tricycle at night.  She thinks this is safer.

We came withing about 2 feet of hitting once since I did not see her until the last second.  it was at night.

I have seen her several times but now I have to look for her.  I once followed her and spoke to her about it and a cop that saw the 1st incident even spoke with her but she does not get it.

If she causes me to be injured or killed, guess who is going to get sued.  I am not one to sue but she is blatently ignoring the law and the requests of myself and the officer to ride on the side that is legal and more safe.

Did I miss something or is this the first thread I've ever read on BT where there is unanimous agreement?

And yes, you can ge t ticketed on a bike.  I was once ticketed for speeding (on a commuter bike, many years ago, by a cop who was having a bad day).  A friend of mine was once ticketed for running a red light (and he deserved it as the coast was not clear at the time....)

With Traffic:

Your speed: 20 mph

Cars' speed: 60 mph

Approach velocity: 40 mph

Against Traffic:

Your speed: 20 mph

Cars' speed: 60 mph

Approach velocity: 80 mph

But here is the rest of the story.

The force of a potential impact is propotional to the square of the velocity.  So while the relative speed at impact is twice as much, the FORCE is 4x as much.
