Subject: Fitting cleat to new shoes

So I bought a new pair of Shimano Tri shoes today, and also picked up some Look cleats.  I need a little advice on how to correctly line up the cleat on my shoe.  I had some knee issues last year that were resolved when I had my bike fitting done and the fitter adjusted my cleats - problem is I don't know what he did.  He simply moved the cleats a bit, no shims were added, but I'd like to avoid making the same mistake I made when I added my cleats last year..

Any suggestions on how to line up my cleats properly would be appreciated.

I just did the same thing.  I went back to my fitter and had him install the cleats on my new shoes.  I'm sure I could have figured out where to put them but have a lot of faith in my fitter in finding exactly where the cleats need to be.  As a plus, I ask that my fit be reviewed and had a few small adjustments made.  Well worth the minimal fee in my opinion.

The fore/aft position is easy enough to set correctly.  Position the cleat so that the ball of your foot is over the axle of the pedal.

The angular position should place your foot in a natural position.  If you've got cleats with float (Look cleats come in either no float (black), 4.5° (grey) or 9°(red)) then as long as you set them in roughly the right position you should be fine.  A little trial and error is usually needed here - if you don't feel comfortable or are experiencing any pain then adjust the angel slightly.

I sue a bit of a cheater's method, but it works.

1.) INstall the cleats, but don't snug the screws. Just a couple of turns of the screw to hold the cleat on the shoe.

2.) Bring a friend and either white paint, a scratch awl or very bright craft pen to a parking lot

3.) Find a light pole, clip in and ride around a bit. Be sure you get the cleat sliding on the sole of the shoe, then just pedal lightly around the lot.

4.) When you slow to stop, DON'T unclip! Slow and grab the lightpole.

5.) Have your friend lift your heel and mark the cleat position on the shoe. After they get both marked, you can un-strap.

6.) Bring the cleat to the marks and snug it down.

This sets it in an average position for your pedaling style. It works for me...
