Subject: Is it Me??
Hello All,

Just wanted to ask if anyone has had the same problem as I??

Sorry to rant more than once this month, but. I went to the local pro-bike store to pick up a new jersey and shorts and stuff....just out shopping. Got some real bad vibes from the staff......for one, everyone avoided me, two it was not that crowded, three, when I finally got some help, I asked for some bigger sizes, (IS XL a non-standard Size) i got smirked at....

This is what makes me shop online ALOT.....

Anyway, just wanted to ask if anyone else had the same problem. Let me know...Thanks..ED

I just ask if they have an adult section for their clothes. I don't even begin to think that a local shop will have my size, so I usually buy online. I went to a tri this year that had several shops and vendors come together for a product expo and not one had anything over xl.

It aint you, its them.

If the LBS and LTS (local tri shops) want the business of the MAJORITY of triathletes, who are novices, they will have to stock the larger sizes.  If they just want the fanatics, they are heading in the right direction.

I never knew that I could barely fit into an XXL.  In the rest of the world, I wear XL shirts, and L shorts.

Its not you.  Its the sizing systems.  Trixie on BT is the tiniest of tiny people.  She is 5'3" and weighs about 100# soaking wet and has about 5% body fat.  She bought some tri shorts in size small and they were ...tight.....WTF?  The vendor told her she needed a medium?????  Who do they make the extra smalls for?  If someone who is so small she wears childrens clothes needs  medium wht are the rest of us supposed to wear.  Ithink there is great varition from brand to brand too.

It's not you it's them.  The basic rule of an LBS is they suck.  I basically use them for times when I am stuck and can't figure stuff out using, Sheldon Brown, Park Tools or Youtube oh and I have a week or two for them to get around to it.  I make it a point to never purchase anything from them that I could order.  The coming recession should correct the issue that some of them are still in business shortly.  I would consider shopping a going out of business sale.

For the record my wife is 5-6 and 140 and wears a LARGE in Louis Garneau (it probably depends on the exact suit).  Nike made great clothing but I think they cut the line when LA retired.  Maybe it will come back.  Until then if you can find 10/2 jerseys or shorts I highly recommend them.

You can win over the bike store by asking for Zipp Zed-Tech and telling them how 1 watt over 20k will make all the diference.  Oh and carbon bottle cages/aero bottle- make sure to save at least 10g for every $50 you spend it's the value that you need.  I think that's what they live for.

Thanks everyone....its good to hear that I am not alone in what has been happening. I have drfted a letter to the bike store, and the BBB in San Antonio. THey are in my care and ready to go.

To make it worse, I printed out a listing of all the Tri related purchases over the past year, it was about 1200 or so. They will not get a chunk of that, even if they are within walking distance of my home.

Anyway, thanks again.........hope to hear from everyone soon....ED.

I'm starting to loathe going to bike stores. I don't think it's a size thing, they're just more interested in bikes than customers. Then again, I seem to have found a good LBS so I will be giving them most of my business. Still, a closer shop is more convenient for smaller things (I had to buy a spoke today) so I just hold my nose and deal with it.

On the one hand, I'd love to be able to buy everything online. On the other, after my recent experience with bike shorts (one XL fit perfectly, another I couldn't get much past my knees), I know there are times when I just have to go in.

Hang in there and keep on looking for a good, attentive LBS. The one you're looking for is out there...somewhere.

I had bike shops not even want to show me road bikes when I was 250 pounds.

And then they will wonder and complain why customers like me ordered a bike online ...

As for the clothes, I still wear predominently men's simply because the highest quality shorts do not make XXL women's. But I am thrilled that my XXL women's are now too big and I can fit in XL men's. *sigh*
