I'm signed up for McNaughton.  Last weekend was a 13.5 mile trail run, today was an 11.3 mile run.

where are you from mcfuzz?

I did a 11 miler Saturday on a local bike path, icy for most of it then we got onto trails.  A little shorter than I wanted to, but with the ice and trail it adds a bit.

Be careful starting Weds if you run outside.  It will get cold.

I have a running mask but my undershirt and jacker are too short so I have exposed skin.  how funny is that?

I am not sure I even want t go outside to go to the gym.  Some area's by me -20 without the wind chill.

I officially signed up today!

I ran on the indoor track this week and am saving my long run until Sunday when it's supposed to be both warmer AND not snowing. We just need a couple tolerable weekends each month to get the good long miles in and we'll be set.

I did 14 in the cold and the wind too. Not so much fun during, but glad I did it afterwards.

You guys should plan a road trip to run with our group sometime. We are doing 14 this weekend in downtown Springfield. Most of our runs are on parts of the Lincoln Memorial Half Marathon course which takes you past many of Springfield's most historic sites and landmarks. On January 31st, our marathon group will be joining the Half Wits training group. They train for the Lincoln Memorial Half Marathon, but we will be adding mileage after running with them. Their group has grown over the years and can be anywhere from 30-50 people running! You all are welcome anytime, just give me a heads up, I can give you directions and look out for you if I know you are coming.

Happy running!

Thanks for the offer, but I have a hard time driving a half-hour to run.   (I will this spring, particularly to do some of the trail runs leading up to McNaughton. )  One of our "locals" is running 40 this Saturday.

I hope everyone was able to get out and enjoy the warm weather this weekend. I did a little over 16 miles and LOVED that it was above freezing finally (actually that it was even above zero - above freezing was a bonus).

1:45:00 run yesterday and one hour run today.

Felt great both days.

This is my first marathon so, question for those who have done ones and I am too lazy to lookit up somewhere else.  When do I start practicing using like Gu or something on my long runs?  The 14ish or whatever I did yesterday I felt fine, but obviously I will probably need something to help me out for the upcoming weeks?

When do you use those?

Start NOW!! It's never too soon if you're trying to figure out your nutrition for a long event like this. Usually you don't need them for anything under about an hour, but if you've never used them before you're going to need to experiment a little. You might try them out during shorter runs to see if you like/can handle the flavors and make sure they don't upset your stomach before you head out on a long run assuming it will be your nutrition. You'll need to swallow them with about 4 oz of water to get them into your system.

I would buy a couple of different brands and flavors. I would also experiment with timing. I take them every 40 minutes if they are my only source of nutrition. If I'm also using sports drink I can go a little longer. Some people take them more often, some less. Most people recommend ingesting them with water so you're not mixing up your sugars and things (it's easier on your stomach). And if it's cold, they can get chewy and gross so warm them up with your hand before you take them.

Edited to add: Whatever you use on a run, stick to the same brand the whole time. That way if it upsets your stomach you know it was that particular brand. If you used three different kinds you won't know which one it was or if it was the combo of the three together.

If you're planning on using just sports drink (that's usually not enough for me), do some training runs with whatever will be available on the course to make sure your stomach can handle it. If it can't, start working on your backup plan - what you'll use, how you'll carry it, etc.

Definitely report back and let us know what you tried and what you thought about it. Peoples' preferences on this issue are about as varied as your options so someone else might have some other suggestions.

I am going to try out the gu thing on my long run today.

New question, at what point do you drink water on a long run?  Again, I am fine for 14-15 miles without water, or have so far....when do I get a drink?

I am a total marathon newbie here, so if these are stupid questions I am sorry.

you tend to drink about ever 1 - 3 miles.  If you want to simulate a race day environment I would drink about as often as they have water stops on the course.

Important you do drink in training.  One its alot better on your body.  I can not see how you are going that far without being thirsty.  Second if you do not practice drinking your body will not learn to absorb it and come race day you could be in a world of hurt.  Nothing like being dehydrated with a belly full of water.

In most of my training runs, I drink about every 15 minutes, but chirunner is right that it's good to know where the water stations are on the course so you know about how you'll need to space it on race day and can practice that.

I don't know how you make it 14-15 miles without water either. I can make it up to about an hour ten to an hour twenty if I have to. I think the longest I went was 1.5 hours on a trail run because I didn't know they wouldn't have any aid stations.

I've found that my performance is much better if I stay adequately hydrated. Certainly over the course of the marathon your performance will be much better. Dehydration is one of those things that can sneak up on you and you don't realize how bad it's gotten until its too late to save your race. Staying on top of it early will help a lot in the later stages of the run.

The reason I have went so long without water is once I am out there my ending destination is back home to get a drink.  Out on runs there is no workign water fountain at a park.

Decatur - I pm'd you with some suggestions on how to hydrate while running an out and back course. If you've got a little red 1 in front of the words "new messages in your inbox" it's from me.
