Subject: Changing Skewer for trainer?

Afternoon all

Before I bring the bike inside and set up the trainer for the winter should I change the skewer?  I have a Bontrager on the wheel now and the Kurt trainer came with steel one.  It seems to me that changing to the steel one for the winter would make sense.  Less strees on the road skewer.  However I was looking for some more experinaced input.

Also is it just slide the old one out and the new one in?  Any little tricks or an exploded parts diagram somewhere to look at?

I'm not an expert, but was told to change mine, and I did. I alternate between trainer and road a lot, so for convenience I just left the 'trainer' skewer in permanently, though I just got a cheap second wheel to use exclusively on the trainer, so now I'll be able to swap the whole wheel out (mostly so I can use a trainer tire on the trainer and a road tire on the road).

I've heard people say that the trainer doesn't really damage the skewer though, apart from cosmetically.

Yeah, just slide out and in. No diagram needed.

Edit:  Hmm.  I just reread that last sentence.  No innuendo intended, I assure you.

If the skewer has a carbon lever, you can crack it. Regardless, change to the trainer skewer since you'll chew up whichever one you use over time.

I second all the recommendations for going with a steel one on the trainer.  Each winter I swap mine out for the trainer.  As stated above it is very simple to change one out.

Also the steel skewer gives the trainer more to hold onto so you don't going flying off the thing. Some of the road skewers won't even work in the trainer anyways so you have to use the steel one.

Yep. I swap out for a generic steel skewer on the c-trainer. Why bust up a carbon skewer? and why scratch up a nice skewer?

I dont think it matters a whole lot...but steel skewers are cheap, and carbon skewers are expensive. Nuff said.

I use the skewer that came with the trainer because they are designed to fit together securely. None of my others work as well.

thanks for all the replys.  I was 99% sure to go to the steel skewer, for most of the reasons you all mentioned.  I just wanted to make sure I was not overlooking something.

Gotta to admit, this is the first year I am thinking damn snow is messing up my road time.

This is actually an important question. The reason the trainer comes with a heavy-duty skewer is for safety. I knew someone who's skewer broke on the trainer and she was seriously injured. I can only assume that this happened to a number of people and now trainers come with heavy-duty skewers.

The steel skewer that is included with the Kurt should most definitely be used. The cups that clamp on to the skewer are designed around it to make it clamp on the skewer and not directly on your frame.
