Pre-race routine:

I flew up to Boston and drove to Hyannis on Saturday morning. After checking into the hotel, I caught up with most of the BT gang at the race expo. We laughed and carried on all afternoon and evening. Ate lunch at Friendly's and got my Jim Dandy fix. (Thanks, Max!) Ate a wonderful pasta dinner at Ellen and Mike's house with the entire crew.

I slept about 7 hours and ate a bagel and bananna around 7:30. Had a cup of coffee and some water with ibuprofrin. Got dressed and met up with Evelyn, May, Max and Patty. It was quite cold outside and very windy, so we camped out in my hotel room for a short while. Back in the lobby, we all met up with Glen and his friend, Nicole, as well as Kevin and Nikki. 10 minutes before the 10 AM start, it was time to head outside.
Event warmup:

Walking from the hotel lobby to the start line. Probably should have done more warm up, but oh well. LOL I went against everyone's advice and took off my sweats to just run in shorts and my sweatshirt. This turned out to be a very good move. 10 AM, a cheer went up, and off we went.

Comments:

I have never run this far before, or this hard for so long. I wanted to finish under 2:00, but my secret goal was 1:57 (3 minutes for Kristen). May, Max, Glen, Nicole and I took off together. The crowd was pretty thick, and we passed a LOT of people. At the 1 mile mark, May and I both checked our times and looked at each other. 9:30.....30 seconds behind schedule! We took off. The crowd was thinning a bit, and we worked hard to weave through traffic. At mile 2 we were 8:34, and back on track. Max, Glen and Nicole did not go with us when we took off. May and I settled into a great pace, under 9:00/mile for miles 3-7. Glen and his friend, Nicole, cruised by us around the 6 mile mark, looking like they were out for a 2 mile stroll. My cell phone rang somewhere around the 7 mile mark, and it was Ellen, making sure I joined them for lunch at her house. LOL She was pretty shocked that I answered, and had a 2 minute conversation with her! :-) We had just turned away from the beach and started up a 1/2 mile slight hill. I think May wanted to kill me, because this was the point where she really started having trouble catching her breath, while I was chatting away on the phone. It turns out, she was running with the beginnings of a cold, and I'm sure that affected her. Her heart had no problems, though. She pushed, hard! At this point, I completely let her set the pace, and just worked to keep up with her. I don't know what got into her at mile 10, but she dragged me along for an 8:40 mile! We slowed a bit for miles 11 and 12, so we would be ready to push to the finish. May kept telling me to go ahead of her, but I suspected it was a ploy so she could walk for a bit! ;-) Honestly, I could barely have gone faster for those two miles, and maybe only had 1 more minute in me. At mile 12, we both picked it up a bit. The 12.5 point was where she made me leave and push. 12.5 is the longest I had previously run, so it was invigorating to push the pace at that point. I ramped up my speed, until I was in an all out sprint by mile 13. I know I blew by 20 or 30 people in .6 miles. The finish line was at the top of a short hill, and I crossed it with a HR of 190. I let rip with a loud scream of pure joy and adrenaline! :-)

What would you do differently?:

I would not change a thing about this race. The company was amazing, the course was beautiful, I pushed to my limit, and I had more fun than should be legal, during the race, and over the whole weekend! :-) Only one thing was missing from the weekend, and she had a good excuse! ;-)

Post race
Warm down:

Stretched, and drank water and Red Bull.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Only my experience with distance running, and my muscular endurance in my legs.

Event comments:

More fun than should be legal! I had so much fun meeting everyone and spending the weekend together! Huge thanks to Ellen, Mike, and Matt for welcoming us all into their home!

And a special thanks to my rabbit! May, it was a treat to run with you! :-)

Overall: 572/1020
Performance: Good
Course: Streets through the pretty town of Hyannis, and along the beach front. There was 8-10 inches of snow on all the grass, enough to make everything beautiful, but the roads were completely clear and dry. The course was mostly flat, with just a few slight climbs. The wind was much less than forcast, and was really only a factor when right along the beach.

LOL, Mike!! Who was whose rabbit!? It was great pacing YOU!! You were great to run with and you ran so strong - friggin hooting and hollering at all the bystanders chatting everyone up WHILE I WAS DYING!!! But at least I know how to run and don't kick myself (The secrets that emerge when you have a running partner!)

And yes, you KNOW I would have chucked your phone into the ocean if Ellen asked to talk to me and you handed me the phone.....of course that's after I'd have said FUKC YOU to Ellen!!

And that Mile 10 thing?? I dunno...it was the force. I had to concentrate so hard to keep running and that's just what happened. BUT you were AMAZINGLY IMPRESSIVE when you took off at 12.5! You are the new "1:50" harrassee!

I hope you don't end up catching this cold from me...

Edit: Ooops I forgot to also add it was great meeting you, and thanks for making us New Englanders look like a bunch of sissies running in our cold gear while you pranced around in shorts!

Great job Mike and May...and of course to all of you. I was way way way way way back in the pack doing my usual slow slow pace. You are an inspiration.

It was great meeting all of you, and great seeing Max again. I wasn't able to make it there for saturday but at least got the chance to meet everyone.

I'm impressed Mike .  To achieve such a time with little race experience is tremendous.  Cheers for having a plan and sticking to it.  THAT helps.  I was pleased to see you wore shorts!!  Great call.  Anytime you feel *warm* at the start is a clue to chuck some clothes.  Heck, I'm talking like you're a VET.

I gotta tell ya...I was a wee bit concerned about your SUPER TAPER , but you proved me wrong .  Me thinks you have PLENTY of untapped talent.  Can't wait to see what happens when you DROP THE HAMMER in your training

That was an excellent race.  I'm not so sure I'd answer (or even carry) the cell phone in the race, but it could be your secret weapon!  Everyone sounds like they had a great time meeting up too!
