I'm hoping this shows up as legible in the thread as it looks on my desktop .......

Been having some weird issues with my monitor.  At least that is what I thought it was.  Purple lines, green fuzziness behind the icons, weird refreshing, etc.  I thought the monitor had just crapped out as it was getting worse.  So today I bought a new 19" LCD from Best Buy.  Well ..... still the same thing.

I did install and use the driver that came from LG with the new monitor, and even with the new driver it is still doing the same thing.  So basically I just spent $220 for nothing other than a wider/bigger screen than I had (had an 18" square older LCD that was always nice.  This one is obviously better, but still didn't need to do the upgrade).

Hopefully someone could help me figure it out as I am not all that savvy.  Computer is a Dell XPS 3.2 with 1G RAM and a 256 ATI Radeon video card.

Could the video card be crapping out???

Try adjusting the refresh rate for the monitor.  Control Panel - Display - Settings - Advanced - Monitor.  Try some different screen refresh rate settings.  Sometimes higher is better, sometimes lower, it seems to depend on the combination of video card and monitor.  If that doesn't help, you could also go to the Dell support website to see if they have a newer video driver that can be downloaded.

 Good luck...

All I see is solid black behind the icons.  Since it wasn't the monitor, I'm sure you can just pack it back up and return it if you don't really want the upgrade.  Unfortunately, no idea on how to solve your display issue.

Can't change the refresh rate ... it is stuck at 60 hz on the pulldown (no other options).

Gonna go to the Dell site and see what they might have for updates ........ the computer is 4-1/2 years old ....

Reloaded the video card driver.  No change, still all messed up.

I'm playing a bunch of stuff ........ mainly "Boatzee" which is the ItsYourTurn version of Yahtzee (the dice game where you roll combinations).  I also play chess a lot.

Guess I'm going to have to wait until my brother comes over for T-Giving as he is the IT guy and would know how to trouble shoot it.  I'm thinking more now that the video card has just gave up the ghost .....

I didn't see in that JPG what you were describing, but, have you powered off the PC, unplugged the PC, tried reseating the video card, and then replug everything?  Can you put the video card in another slot (I'm guessing that it's not EISA but PCI) and verify again?

Do you have a magnet or something magnetic closeby?

Are the drivers for the video card the correct ones and are up-to-date, the same for the monitors?

This is what I can think of at the top of my head.

BTW - it was worth getting the bigger monitor anyways.

Is there a menu on the monitor itself (and thru its software) for monitor adjustments?  If there is a degaussing option, try that.  Otherwise, I got nothing.  The degauss may help if the monitor has been subjected to some stray magnetic field.

Interesting ... now that I'm at work on a different computer I see the screen capture did not get the green crap or the purple lines.

That reinforces that it is something from the computer to the monitor and not the monitor.  Talked with my brother (IT nerd) and he thought the same thing ...... bad video card.

Gonna go pick one up today and see if that makes the difference.

Thanks all for the help.
