Pre-race routine:

Woke up early, had toast with vegemite, a cup of coffee and some water and went to meet my brother at the beach. It was pouring rain, windy and cold so we decided just to go and see what was happening...
Event warmup:

Just stretched a little

Comments:

Oh my goodness - what a terrible experience! The day was cold and wet and windy and that water was as choppy as it gets in the Bay. I looked at the ocean and knew it was going to be bad! They decided to shorten the race to 1km instead of 1.5km as the water was too rough and choppy and they were worried about storms coming through at any moment. In any case the water was terrible - logs and big planks of wood, plastic bags and rubbish made it disgusting. Then they also decided to have EVERYONE start together - it was bedlam (I think they just wanting to get everyone into and OUT of the water). The field was 70% male and I got punched, kicked, dragged etc - It wasn't a lot of fun. I struggled to get out to the first bouy - waves and the current made it really hard work and I felt like I was going to have a heart attack (seriously - my chest was so tight...), I even considered putting my hand up and getting the lifeguards to come and get me - but one thing that I am is extremely persistent - so I pushed on. It was very very difficult to find any sort of rhythm when swallowing so much water and dodging the other bodies - I didn't enjoy myself... The current pulled most of us way off course coming in so it was just really hard work. Then by some stroke of genious they decided 2 laps of a 500m course would be better with a beach run thrown in between the laps just for fun... All things considered though a bloody great time!!!!
What would you do differently?:

Not swim in those conditions!
Post race
Warm down:

Got changed, ate some fruit, had water, went home and had a long hot shower!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Everything - the weather etc etc etc

Event comments:

Hmmm, I guess you would have to say that is one to log for experience. I have competed in about 10 OW swims now (including triathlon's) and this would have to rate as THE WORST ever!

You definately belong on this site M!!  It's the only place we could hear someone describe that experience as a "bloody great time!!"

Sorry to hear that the conditions were not what you had hoped for, to say the least, but like you said, it all goes down to experience in the end.  EVERY open water swim you do from today on is going to seem easy!!

That's why I always loved working with Aussies, even when they're pissed, they're still cheerful.

Great job and way to tough it out.

Persistence wins every time. You've done it again. Great stuff. Sounds like you were swimming in the same race as me M - except we didn't have any hard objects floating around, just heaps of those soft mushy ones!! Take cars. Susan.

Mmmmmm Port Phillip Bay. Such a fantastic place. Well done! That sounded terrible. Not real enjoyable at all. You deserve two thumbs up just for getting out there and having a go.

Hopefully it's a hell of a lot better in Geelong in a few weeks. You still planning to race in Geelong? That's going to be a big weekend.

Wow! You are my favorite masochist! Way to take control of your emotions and hang in there!

Being stubborn pays off in these  sports.

oh yeah.......18C, raining and with all that crap in the water, sounds like fun to me!!

Well done and a good time, considering the conditions.

Paul

PS I saw the Saturday morning practice for the Grand Prix cars and it seemed Melbourne had turned on it's best weather and then turned it off again, and then turned it on again.

Thanks everyone - I am pleased to report that 2 days later and I am not ill - I am a little bit surprised actually considering how much of that filthy water I consumed...
Looking forward to better racing condition for my last couple of races for the season.
