Champion 6539 South Jersey | Subject: RE: World Championship on TV PennState - 2008-12-14 8:30 AM jkron - 2008-12-13 11:06 PM They didn't show or mention the 35-year old Marine major who did the bike wearing his combat boots with cleats fitted, battle dress utility uniform, and wearing his issued kevlar helmet. Then for the run he changed into a fresh set of utilities and combat boots, and ran the whole thing. Finished in 13-14 hours. 1700+ athletes in an hour and a half; they can't show everyone. I think a quick word on how the spotlighted athletes Kona qualified would be quite helpful. I'm curious about how an ex-baseball player, Jeff Conine, got in. In general, I thought it was a pretty decent show. This on I can answer... he got a sponsor's exemption. The sponsor is allowed to pick some of their athletes. Media slots are also given out to people they [NBC] think will be good to cover in the broadcast. Edited by LaurenSU02 2008-12-14 9:10 AM |

He did have to complete a sanctioned 70.3 race, beforehand, though. |

Master 2355 Houston, TX | Subject: RE: World Championship on TV I still dislike the fact that they don't give any splits.. or the fact that they didn't mention who it was who came out of the water first.. Just little things like that, that really wouldn't take anything away. |

Extreme Veteran 909 Westchester, NY | Subject: RE: World Championship on TV one thing i didnt like about this years broadcast was that there was too much film and not enough real-time video .. they had some of Macca during the last 2miles of the run that were awesome.. it was hard to judge how fast these people really were on film.. other than that it was pretty ok .. the AGers were really good.. and yes, they should have siad that all these people have to qualify for this race because i think that may have been a big point to the people sitting there saying " i wanna do triathlon".. |

Champion 6962 Atlanta, Ga | Subject: RE: World Championship on TV I think this was the best one in a long time. It focused on the pros and gave you enough updates on the 'special interest' types to keep it going. Everyone at Kona has a story...everyone. What I want to see is how it's done at the highest level and that is the pros. It's tough seeing someone cramp and then latch on to 6:30 miles until the next cramp. The best shot of all I think was when Chrissie retook the lead. She flew by like a motorcycle!! I also wonder if the guys that passed Chrissie at first wish they would have gone back and helped her. And when the girls said, "She's still smiling!". |

I thought the same thing - she took a minute to get going and that made me feel a lot less bad about my awkward biking skills. |

About 30 rpm for a while before getting back into it. |

Champion 6931 Bellingham, Washington | Subject: RE: World Championship on TV Finally finished watching the tape last nite, The really scary moment was the 57 year old on the bike that was wobbling down the road and looked to be heading into on coming traffic. Than they finally tried to catch him as he fell off the bike into the back of the car... Interesting how the Navy Seal storyline started with Goggins and than continued later with one of the Seal team commanders....Wish the Marine major was shown. Over all a good show, not NBCs best, but still very good. Also mentioned the twins from Germany (?) being the first twins to finish Kona. I thought the Puntous sisters finished the IM together a couple of times. Edited by BellinghamSpence 2008-12-15 2:37 PM |

Extreme Veteran 378 Seattle | Subject: RE: World Championship on TV The amazing thing for me was seeing Chrissie surge back to the bike lead after the flat tire. It's incredible how dominant she is at the moment, and how much of an impact her dominance has clearly had on her rivals. She's sitting on the side of the road with a flat, and they're talking about how she's just going to win by less now. Sure it was a joke, but it's definitely there in their minds. Only a few athletes get so far to the top of their sport that they are so far under the skin of their competitors. Almost reminds me of Tiger - it doesn't matter how far back he is; when it comes to the final round you know the leaders are looking for his name on the board.

Keep checking the listings or Ironman.com For those of you who have the NBC Sports (Universal Sports) channel, they aired Kona last night and it's actually on right now. I recently set up my digital converter box, since I was using rabbit ears, and I now have this channel. I don't know if it's available through cable/satellite providers. It's a pretty cool channel -- swimming, cycling, ITU racing, track and field, skilling, ski jumping, luge, speed skating, etc., and, of course, multiple showings of Kona. |
