OK, my new obsession is about to give birth to a physical form. My first race is Saturday in Athens, Texas.:-) 300M (pool) swim, 12 mile bike and 5K run. I can do the bike and the run no sweat... I did a 18 mile/4.6 mile brick on Saturday. The swim is not a slam dunk, but I am pretty sure I can make it in the time I submitted.

Also, this week is a recovery week for me. After the brick on saturday, I did an hour in the pool and 20 more miles on the bike yesterday, so my body is screaming for some rest, and I aim to give it what it wants so I am ready to fly on Saturday!

I have a friend that is doing the race as well, and he has done several tri's, so I am hoping we can ride up there together, and he can give me all sorts of tips and such...

Let's roll!

Good luck there boss. Just take it easy this week and don't do anything out of the ordinary. Make sure that on the day before you do something light and easy just to stay loose. One more thing, if you want to get a good night's sleep, make sure it is two nights before. That way if you don't sleep well the night before, it won't affect you. Once again GOOD LUCK!

Phil,
I will be in Athens, as well!!! WHOO HOO!! It is a really neat race. No expo and no big event, but the course is fun and the race personnel are really friendly. I think they appreciate that we come from all over to help their little YMCA! The one thing to be aware of is the master's style pool swim. They allow 10 seconds between each person entering the pool. There will be people grabbing at your ankles and possibly kicking you in the face (not deliberately, but it happens in this kind of swim). Just keep swimming. I ended up doing quite a bit of the swim side stroking, because I was so shocked at being "touched" in the pool! I hope you do well! It really ended up being a fun race for me (it was my first tri ever)! Maybe I will see you there!

Tiger and Vmax, what a small world! I'll be doing my first tri there as well, along with a SIL, bil, and two nephews also logging their first tris. I'm not out for time, so could I ask here first not to grab my ankles if you want to pass me in the swim? I am happy to let you past me.

How will we recognise each other prior to the event? I'm signed up for a 6:30 swim. Would it help if I wore an Aikane sign around my neck?

BTW, you do know that the bike is 14 Mi, right? I heard two different distances so I emailed the race coordinator. Her answer--14 mi bike, but it is a new course. I've never done this, nor any tri, but I thought I'd pass it along. Happy motoring.

I signed up for a 7:45 swim. The swim is easily my weakest discipline, so just getting through with it is my goal, then I can tear it up on the bike and run.

14 miles? All the stuff I have seen says 12 miles... I do plan on going to Athens Friday evening and driving the bike course, and I guess we can log the miles there. But 14 is no problem, as long as everyone else has to ride that distance, too.

Yup. 14 miles it is. Check out the email from the race director:

Thank you for you note, Action.com was asked to make the change, the correct mileage is 14 miles.
