To our salty vets: Has anyone set a time goal or any other type of goal for this race? I'm looking to break 1:20. This was my goal last year and I missed it by about 4 minutes. I'm in better shape this year but have been doing more lower intensity training, not too much speed stuff. So I think 1:20 is just about right.

I should be about an hour.  6:15, :45, 35, :45, 19:15 or better for each leg

I'll be on a new bike so it should help me but it may throw a wrench in things especially with T2.

David - I think I'm in.

I wasn't going to do it because I have class but I just don't think I care if I skip a day now.

I'll let you know in the next few days if I register. I'm definitely in for car poolin if I go.

Oh, I just saw the later post by newbz about carpoolin.  If I can avoid making the drive solo - I'll travel with anyone who will have me.

Rockin'. Newbz and I have not finalized our plans yet. We'll get you in one way or another.

Hey David, do you know if you're (we're) going with the Dennison team yet?

I'm actually debating on whether to do this or not.  I was initially interested because I just couldn't wait to race again and this was the first one of the season.  Now that the season's here and I've got it mapped-out, I'm just not as excited.  I dunno.  I probably should just throw-down my money and be done with it.

Do it. It's really a fun race. I completely understand about being focused on the A race of the season, but you need some B and C races to get you there. Just consider it a long training day. It'll give you a chance to test out your new wheels before any olys you do later.

How is the transition zone handled in this event?   I know last year there were over 500 participants, and there will likely be more this year, and the parking lot is not that big!

It's big enough. You can squeeze alot of people into that lot. If it gets too big there is that huge field next to pool where they set the finish line up. They will figure something out.

i helped set up last year, the transition are was only about 2/3 filled last year (with racks), so there is plently more room to put more up this year, and that didnt cover the full parking lot.

this was actually one of the more spread out T-areas of any of their races.

David- as of right now, its 3 of us.

my car or my dads can only handle 3 bikes/3 people.
do you have others from columbus wanting to split a ride with you? i think brue mentioned something.

Yeah, Brue needs a ride. Is your dad racing or coming to cheer you on?

I am registering now and it asks for my 400 yard swim time.  It is a 400 meter race.  If I give my 400 yd time and they mean meters I will not be seeded correctly.

400 yd ~ 5:15  / 400 m ~5:45

How do you enter it?

nevermind - i'll just split the difference.

The pieces are coming together:

I got my USAT membership

I registered for the race.

I just came from the pool and am confident I can swim my predicted time

The weather is great and I just dropped the kids off at Grandma's so I going on a 20 miler on the bike path this afternoon and running 14 in the morning.

I just got an email from Performance that my new bike is in!!!!

I have decided that if all is perfect I can go 5:45, :45, 35:00, :45, 19:00  =1:01:15  -now if only I lived in a perfect world.  That is my A goal, My B goal is anything under 1:05, my C goal is finish without injury and Learn something.

What kind of new bike are you getting? I keep looking but I can't afford to spend the money right now.

I looked at a 2009 felt s32 and I tested cervelo p2 ultegra and Felt s22 both 2008 models new.  all ~ $1450 from local bike shops.  pedals are extra of course

i landed on a new 2008 schwinn prologue bought at another local bike shop $999 including shipping and pedals (now I need biking shoes).  What makes this less expensive are the shimano 105 components as opposed to the ultegra.  Other than that I think they are all comprable bikes.

I passed on a $1050 s32 felt on ebay because I trust a local bikes shop more, no shipping fee, and bikes shops offer free maintenance and tune ups for a year to life (Performance and Bike Source offered Lifetime on labor - since Schwinn offers lifetime on parts I am covered)

Finally did my first outside brick today. I forgot that it isnt easy to jump off the bike and take off running in a real (not trainer/treadmill) situation. I was disappointed how slow I was on the bike considering the extra training I have put in this winter. I am hoping that it was just the course I picked. Now I am gripping on whether I should actively shop for another bike ( My 200$ internet special might not be cutting it) or chill out and see how this race turns before I consider my bike needs for my OLY/half summer stuff.

do the race then think about the bike.

in all honesty unless you know what you want, going to something that would be a big upgrade is also going to be a big change, and in the few weeks you have left, between fitting, getting it set up, and getting used to it, you would be better off riding what you have now.

dont worry about speeds so much in training but rather the effort you are putting out (more so to the bike than anything else).

i rode a hard ride yesterday, got back and had an ave speed of like 18.6mph. but it was also one of the harder rides i have done this year. road surface, wind, stoping, turning, etc all slow down your ave. the miami course (if the same or anything like last year) is going to be a slower course (i normally ave 24-26 in sprints and was the fastest bike time at miami last year with 22.7). between turns and hills it saps a lot of speed.

good luck and keep up the training, looks like you are headed in teh right direction.

yeah my wife gave me good advice , " chill out...go take a shower and dont sit on the couch."

I forgot for some reason that I did have stop signs, traffic and railroad ties I had to go over. Adding that to the big climb each loop makes me feel better about my time on the road.

just a quick bump to see how people are doing in prep for this?

course looks the same as last year, so should be fun to compare times.

my swim has dropped off a bit but the bike has come way up. if times from last year are accurate (the run times have changed 4 diff times) i would love to see something in the 58min range.

I should be ready for the run and bike but the swim I still need much more pool time. The heater has been out in the pool so I have only went once this week. I will be doing my first 5k for the year next weekend so that will give me a good idea how my running is. I had a PR on the bike last weekend on my training course and feel good on the bike.

i hear you, my pool time is down, but sadly so is my running.

the bike is going very well though, hoping to go a min or so faster than last year. slow bike course though, so we'll see.

I'm feeling best about the swim and the run at this point.  Been swimming and running 3 times a week for the past month and about.5 times a week on the bike (cold weather wimping-out and no trainer), but I do plan on getting out there more very soon.
