Subject: recommendations for winter riding boots / solutions?
The biggest issue I have with winter riding is cold feet. My toes start out cold, go through painful pins and needles, then settle into dull numbness. And that's with neoprene booties. Temps in the 30-45 range is winter riding to me - I don't ride colder than that.

It's possible my real problem is that the Sidi Genius shoes I use are a notch too small.

But I am tempted to buy winter cycling boots. Anyone use them or have a good solution for winter riding or other thoughts?

I have Louis Garneau cycling booties for over my shoes.  My feet still get cold when it's really brutal out -  it was -5 and -10C with wind chill this morning and my toes were numb.

I like these ones because they are heavier than the others that I've seen.  I ride year round in the cold but my ride is only about 5k.

The field expedient method is pulling a heavy wool sock over your shoe, then slitting a hole for the cleat. I read somewhere that they use to do this in the old days.

I can get two black wool socks over each of my shoes in this fashion. My feet stay nice and toasty down around the 15-20 F degree mark. My feet actually stay warmer this way then with the Gore windslice booties, I bought. The only problem is getting your shoes off.

But, being from Alabama, I don't know what cold is.

I had a problem with cold feet and tried Perf. toe covers for $ 10 with wooleator socks and toe WARMERS inside... rode up/down the Blue Ridge Parkway in 35-40 deg weather with no problem.... feet were toasty warm, and that included the 20+ min screaming decent @ 40+ mph.

I just used my $20 Izumi Pearl toe covers and I LOVE THEM! After freezing my feet off with anything under 60 degrees (Specialized Tri-Vent shoes) no matter what kind of socks I'm wearing, these things ROCK.

Oh, did I mention I'm happy with these?

I have done four rides recently that were under 35 degrees and my feet were very cold with PI toe covers, I even had two pairs of socks, nylon and then wool, cold still. The last ride I did was 27 degrees and totaly froze, so Im either getting Booties, or toe warmers for my next long cold ride, booties seem to impress everyone in my bike club.

I bought a pair of Neoprene booties from Performance for $19.99, they work great.  I just wear a pair of heavier socks and am good to go.
