Age Group Rank = 1/4
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4:30 - filled water bottles and packed the car - ate a bagel with PB and half a banana. GU about 15 minutes before wave went off.
Event warmup:

got to site at 6:30 - Packet pickup and chip. Set up 2nd to last spot of rack and triple checked everything. Bike ride 40 minutes before start and short jog 30 minutes before the swim start. Got Wetsuit on and headed for the corral. 5 minute warm-up swim prior to instructions.
Swim
  • 26m 39s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 37s / 100 yards
Comments:

I started at the front and slightly right of the buoy line - Seeweed patch for first 100 yards - was able to get to the front and maintain a solid pace for first 400 and then settled in. I felt very comfortable the whole swim and time-wise about where i wanted to be.
What would you do differently?:

Drafting should have been done better as I was (3) across the last 750 yards.
Transition 1
  • 00m 56s
Comments:

A little trouble getting wetsuit off but time still pretty good.
What would you do differently?:

went well - transition was on grass and dirt which i dont like very much.
Bike
  • 1h 12m 10s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 20.66 mile/hr
Comments:

This was a good ride for me - I moved up to 4th at the Turnaround and moved into 3rd by the end of the bike. The hillier course benefits me because I train on them so much. I was trying to get my HR to a good level but seemed to stay elevated the whole ride until the very end. Able to get HR down by transition. A bit of a cluster the last 6 miles as we mixed in with the sprint but no problems.
What would you do differently?:

get HR down quicker on the bike
Transition 2
  • 00m 32s
Comments:

good transition
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Run
  • 47m 46s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 07m 41s  min/mile
Comments:

The trail run was horrible - sprained my ankle the first .5 mile of the race but did not bother me too much on the run. The second trail portion was brutal - roots and uneven ground with winding trail - and could not get in a rythem. The final 1.5 miles i kicked it up a bit and finished strong. This was a little bit grueling being my first Oly but felt awesome to compete so well. If I can get my run down near 7 minute miles I can be very competitive.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing - best I could do today
Post race
Warm down:

drink drink drink - stretch out as I was very tight and tired.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Can improve alot on the run I think - just run more miles this winter and get that aspect kicked up.

Event comments:

Overall OK - nothing great - They cut way back on the amenities - no goodie bag at PPU - no finishing towels - and run course was marginal for the Oly. I had fun though.
