Comments: My weakest event actually turned out to be my best. I started at the back, to avoid copping a whack in the face. Drafted some guy for a lot of the race, except his navigation was a bit off, causing us to zig zag somewhat. Otherwise I felt pretty good. What would you do differently?: More race pace training. Transition 1
Comments: Dropped my goggles when I took my cap off. I had a long run from my bike rack through transition to the exit. I decided to run in my bike shoes as I wasn't to confiedent and hadn't been able to get in to them effectively on the bike while training. Once I got to the mount area, I had a bit of trouble getting into the clips, probably because I was rushing too much trying to get out there. What would you do differently?: Practice more with getting feet into shoes while on the bike so I don't waste that time. Bike
Comments: The wind was strong heading out, but was at my back on the way back in, which saved a bit of energy. My heart rate was around 180 early in the first lap, as a result of the hard swim. I decided this was way too high, and had to ease off. The whole time on the bike I was coughing and spitting up flem which was undesirable and annoying. Also, as a result of the 8:30 wave start (2 hours after the close of transition) my bottle of gatorade had become quite warm, and was difficult to drink. On the long stretches, I was able to work hard in the big chain to good speed. The bike finish/run start timing mat was a fair way from transition (I think) so that's the lap splits/time doesn't add up. What would you do differently?: Freeze my water bottle if I am going to be starting so long after transition closes. Transition 2
Comments: Forgot to hit lap so I'm not exactly sure of the time, but it felt pretty quick. Though I didn't do feet into shoes on bike, I did take my feet out while still riding, which I did very well. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Possibley get elastic laces to make it a bit quicker. Run
Comments: This is where my week of coughing and lack of sleep really caught up with me. Plenty more coughing and spitting of flem. Felt like crap to be honest. Walked a fair bit of the first lap. Was nearly sick once. Dumped water on my head at every aid station and tried to drink 2 cups of water at each. What would you do differently?: Try not to be sick in the lead up to and on race day. Post race Warm down: Sat, drank gatorade. What limited your ability to perform faster: Being sick and having inadequate preparation due to being sick. All things considered, I did alright, but was disappointed that I wasn't able to do as well as I should have. Last updated: 2008-09-20 12:00 AM |

I developed a very bad cold through Tuesday and Wednesday and spent almost all of Friday and Saturday coughing my lungs up. Went to bed Saturday night not knowing whether I would actually go to the race. Woke up Sunday an decided I might as well go, even if I wasn't able to finish. The late start (my wave at 8:30) allowed me to delay eating until a bit later, and also allowed me to have a few coffees.
This was supposed to be just a check to see how I was progressing with my training, but the result doesn't really show anything, as I wasn't healthy at all.
