So there are always discussions about big things like bikes, wetsuits, and trisuits.  I can't seem to find a discussion about the little things. My questions I can think of now are

Do you need to provide your own ankle holder for the timing chip. I can see myself trying to tape it on at my first race 5 minutes before the swim because I didn't know.

I have seen people like race belts and say you can make your own. Are there any directions on what people have done to make them?

What else to you need to bring to race day that isn't obvious?

no, the race will provide an ankle holder. You can buy your own which are more sturdy and comfortable, but not necessary.

When you say race belt are you refering to a fuel belt or a number belt. I dont race with a fuel belt. A number belt is very convenient and nice to have. They only cost about $7 so I never bothered making one. Cant help you there.

Race belt is a great investment - $7, seriously, if that. I suppose you could fashion your own race belt, but really, it's $7 and it'll last forever.

I got a chip strap (again, another $5-$7) after I had one of those medical bracelets pop off during a race, losing all of my splits (as it apparently fell off in the water - I was lucky and found it in the lake after the race). I was POSITIVE I made sure that it was secure. So after that, never again. The $7 will be worth NOT losing all of my times and spending however many seconds/minutes in T2 frantically searching my wetsuit for the damn thing (I noticed it was gone while I was on the bike, so I thought it had come off when I took my wetsuit off in T1). I volunteered at a race in the spring and a good chunk of people had them - some races will even have them at chip distribution for a small fee.

There is a lot of 'optional' stuff.  Best bet is to use the race checklist they have on BT.

EVERY race (triathlon) I have been to provides a velcro strap with the chip connected to it.  You won't need a strap, is my bet.

A race belt is really nice, and is cheap, so it's not worth rigging one up.

You're lucky. I've only ever gotten the plastic medical bracelets at the races I've done. I've seen the neoprene velcro straps sold at races, but I never have cash on me at that point, as I lock my wallet in the car.

I've only had a plastic strap in one race for my chip.  Every other one has been a big azz velcro jail band ....

I am thinking of a  number belt, not a fuel belt.

wurkit gurl  -  Where would you go in the NOVA area? Am I going to find these at a running store or do I need to go to a tri store (Bonzai) or order online?

Man these boards are fast. I just got another response while writing this.

that does suck...  All the local timing companies have the neoprene/velcro.  I guess I am lucky and didn't even know it.

I'm in Falls Church - yes, you can find them at a running store - I know for a fact that they have them at Potomac River Running Co. in Arlington.

Last year, I made a dozen or more race belts myself and gave them as gifts to people who donated for a Susan Komen 5K fundraiser I did. They are easy to make. You need to buy 1" elastic webbing, 1" buckles, and snaps. The only expensive part is buying the tool to insert the snaps that hold the race number itself. I have a neighbor who is a seamstress and she loaned me hers. The cost for me to make each belt was approx $4.00. It wouldn't be worth it if you only need one belt. You can find them online or at your local running/tri store for around $7-10.
