Subject: RE: Another Seattle Area Mugging (Bike) It's good that Cascade is out there, but I don't think this is really a biking issue. It's just muggings. If people were walking through that tunnel they would be just as vulnerable to ambush as a cyclist. The tunnel serves as a bottleneck, so no matter how aware you are of your surroundings your escape routes are limited. Even if you turn and run the other way, it's a long tunnel and you'll probably be caught before you get out of it.
I kind of don't like the idea of Cascade adopting this issue, because if it becomes a bike issue then it would marginalize it and the city might not care so much. Anyone who reads the sound-offs for bike articles in the PI should know what I'm talking about. I would rather see it approached as a general safety thing, so that the city will see incentive to do something about it.
