I use a Look-style pedal and cleat, but the gym I go to is changing to pedals that are incompatible with that style cleat. The old pedals had a cage that would fit into the Look-side of the pedal (you remove the cage when using the Look cleat), and on the flip side was another style pedal that was compatible with another cleat. The new pedal they're going to has a platform with a cage on one side, and the other side has the other pedal style--no Look pedal available. Sorry if I'm not using the right terminology, buy you probably get the picture.

So if I want to go through the expense and hassle of buying the other-stlye cleat, what am I looking for? Like if I go to Nashbar or Performance, is there a style of cleat I should be looking for?

It's either that or bring a pedal wrench and my pedals. GRRR.

They are probably SPDs.

Pedal wrench, pedals and your shoes will work.  I just use an old pair of shoes with SPD cleats for spin class.

In all likelihood, they're switching to SPD. Ask your gym specifically, though.

The pain in the azz for you is that you'll need to buy another pair of shoes as well as cleats. That, or resign yourself to doing indoor cycling classes with sneakers.

All the spin bike I have seen are SPD.

I bought a new pair of cycling shoes, and converted my old pair to a "spinning only" pair (changed them to SPD).

OR, depending on how much you spin (rarely for me), I would consider getting just about the cheapest pair you can find on sale and make them your "spinning" shoes.  I sort of like the MTN bike shoes with real tread, so you can walk around the gym without sliding around on the tile floor with the steel cleats...

Another option would be to buy a cheap pair of pedals and a wrench and just carry them in your bag.  Come in, switch the pedals and your good to go.  We used to do this at a club that I go to.  just get permission from the club.

Changing out the pedals for every class, sounds like a real PITA to me. I would do as the others suggest, and just go buy a cheap pair of mountain bike shoes and some SPD cleats. Or if you're really on a budget, just spin in your regular gym shoes. Although that's not an option for me, because I need a rigid sole on my shoes, otherwise my feet burn and go numb.

It's interesting that your gym's spin bikes were using Look-style cleats...that's the first time I've ever heard of spin bikes using a cleat other than SPD's. Maybe they're deciding to switch to SPD's to conform like most other gyms.

I only clicked on this because it had rant in the title. You're gonna have to do better.

Before you go out and buy new shoes, I would wait to see the new pedals.  They might be similar to the old ones, where you can pop off the platform part of the pedal to access the Look cleat.

If you do need to buy new shoes, you can get new ones very cheap on Ebay ($30).  You just have to know your size.

MTB shoes with SPD cleats are a good gym shoe option because the cleat will typically be recessed enough that you can walk on most of the floors in the gym without leaving a trail of cleat scraped destruction.

Thanks for all the replies. That's exactly what I needed--to know they're spd's. I went ahead and ordered a pair of new shoes on sale from Nashbar and a pair of cleats on Ebay. Spent around $55 bucks total--not bad I thought.
