Subject: questions about tri suits for larger women

I'm 5'10", and weigh 155 pounds.  I'm big on top--34DD.  My pants size is normally a 10.  When I try clothes on, people tend to think I will fit in sizes that are actually smaller than I feel comfortable in.  For example, I recently bought a new swimsuit, and bought a size 38L even though the salesperson was suggesting I try on suits in the 34-36 range.

A few weeks ago, I went to the local tri store and tried on some suits.  I was trying on the 2XU endurance suit, specifically.  The saleswoman thought I would fit in a medium, "at most" a large.  (She said, "they make them in Australia, and they're big people", which I thought was funny).   I tried on the medium, and it completely did not fit, I could not even get my arm through the hole once I had the suit pulled up to my waist.  The large was a little better, still struggled to get my arm through the hole and could hear the fabric starting to rip a little--not good.  But I could at least get it on, but it didn't feel comfortable.  I didn't have time to try on an extra large, so I don't know how that would have felt.

I'm wondering if there are any women about my size who have had good luck buying tri suits, and if so, what brands and sizes?  I don't know if a one-piece is going to work best for me, or if I should go with a two piece.  Another question I have is, if I buy a suit online just to try it on, and it doesn't fit, can I return it?  One thing that is hard is to try on a suit in the store with my underwear and non-sports bra on, which is not how I would actually be wearing it during a race.  So it's really hard to tell if it fits well or not.

I like 2 piece because #1. I am different sizes on top and bottom..  #2 makes emergency pit stops much easier.

I've found huge differences in the way different brands of tri tops fit.  I'd suggest trying on different brands to find the one that fits you best, then you can decide to buy online if you wish.  (I like to buy locally to support the stores).

Hi Sarah! I'm about the same on top (34DD to 38D, depending on manufacturer), with big shoulders, and I have had to purchase men's tops or trisuits (size M or L) to get my arms to fit and the shoulders to be comfortable.

You might be better off with two pieces, since you are quite tall as well.

Danskin makes great trisuits for larger-sized women.

Check the return policy of any online purchases, but almost always they let you return items. I have had good success with www.sportsbasement.com, www.trisports.com, and www.swimoutlet.com.

Good luck!

We are about the same size...ah, except for you have some assets I lack ;-) But b/c my lower half tends to be a large/XL, and my upper half is more like a small, I wear two pieces. I typically race in a sport bra and then either tri shorties or tri bikini bottoms.

Yeah, most tri stuff in a store is made for thin midgets.  Seriously....their version of "large" is laughable.  I know it's supposed to be tight, but COME ON....

The swimsuits might be right....swimsuits for the pool are supposed to be tight.  I'm 5'5" and when I was 155 I would wear a 34 and I have big boobs.  I'm in a 38 now at 190 pounds.  Do they make a 34L?  I would say that would be your size.

Now, on to trisuits.  As someone else suggested...you could try:

1. Men's tri stuff...probably made for the 5'10" figure.  But not made for boobs.
2. Two piece suits....

Also, give http://www.teamestrogen.com/ a try.  GREAT women's clothing, no hassle if you return in because it doesn't fit and they have some "plus sizes".  Though, you don't sound like a plus size to me...just tall.

Thanks for the great links in this thread!  I think I found myself a relatively inexpensive pair of tr shorts! (my first!) Woo hoo.

So do you ladies think (in general) that the shorts run a little small?  I'm not sure if I should get a med or large.  I wear a size 6 or 8 in regular clothes.

Get the Large pants.  Since they are super stretchy, they will definitely fit fine.  It's okay to go a little big on that kind of thing   I'm the same size bottom and that's what I do.

I was also going to second the Danskin tri-suit for "normal" shaped girls.  My bust isn't quite as large, but I have no trouble zipping over the sports bra.  Only bummer is (at least when I looked) the only option was basic black or black with a small flower design.  It's pretty black and severe looking.  It's my favorite tri outfit so far, comfort-wise.

Ugh, this just brings back memories trying on the team uniform for the tri club I joined a fewmonths ago.  Humiliating!  That's just not right, for an otherwise "Medium" sized woman.

Depends on the brand...what brand are you looking at?

ETA: I am a size 8, and wear a medium or large depending on the brand TYPICALLY...but I have a few pairs that are small and XL.

For what it's worth, I am much shorter than you, but similarly sized on top.  I wear size 6-8 pants and just bought a 38 TYR swim suit.  The 36 just felt too small on top, like the straps were cutting into my back.  I have Zoot tri shorts and tri top.  It seems to me that when I buy based on their sizing, things fit pretty well, but they are larger sizes than I would normally buy.  I can check when i get home, but I think I have an XL in the shorts, and a L in the top.  I haven't tried out the top yet, but I have used the shorts and really like them.

I second the Danskin tri suit- I love mine!  I'm 5'2" and 42 34 40 and the XL is too baggy.  I will pull a brick in it but for races I think I'm going to get the L.

Anyone have any reccomendations for anti muffin top shorts?

I just bought a pair of pearl izumi tri shorts from the outlet ($24) in a size large and they are a perfect fit- they are fitted, but appropriately and no muffin top that I have noticed.

I am 5'8" and a size 6-8 on bottom and I love my Desoto tri shorts - large.  The DeSotos seem to be cut a little lower at the waist which I like. I also have Oomph! size large which are snug but comfortable.  I do not like my Zoot tri shorts (only wear them to train). I find that most of the bottoms I buy have to be large (which can be a little discouraging!), but I'd rather them fit right.

zoot tends to run pretty small... for stuff that runs fairly true to size, I like sugoi or pearl izumi.

Tracy-

We have a Pearl Izumi outlet here in Orlando.  I'm not sure where you are located, but if there is a PrimeOne outlet mall around you that is where I found mine.

I just got a pair of Desoto tri shorts for 19.99 and the bra top for 19.99 at www.gotrisports.com!

The only bad thing is that it was in their clearance section and they can't be returned.  But I think they're going to fit based on the info in this thread.  Thanks ladies!

Where is the outlet?  Is it off International?  If so, I am headed to Cheers there tonight and I  might as well stop in and see what they have.  I was looking for the Danskin outlet store there, but I called and the number was disconnected, so I think the store is closed.
