Ok, So i've been lurking,  somewhere on this board I read the difference between wanting to do a tri and willing to do a tri, so this year I WILL do one.  I'm currently deciding which and will sign up with my next paycheck.  I'm a casual bike rider (mid 80's Fuji 12 speed). I started swimming last summer (not a lap in the winter months).  I had never run before, Ever.  Ex-cigarette smoker, still like my cigars.  Seriously took up the treadmill this winter (couch to 5K kinda thing)  Lost 20 Pounds!! I will run a 5k in April and hope to be under 35 minutes.

Would you do a longer distance over a flat course or slightly shorter with some really nice hills?

currently:  6'2" 225lbs

Hi Robbmt

Congrats on making the decision and on the 20# loss. At this point, you probably don't know if triathlon is something you'll enjoy or not, but if you've been lurking here you know that a lot of people really love it. I would sign up for the one that you think is the "easier" of the two. You can always turn up the burner to make an "easy" race as difficult as you want. IMO, your objective for the first race should be to enjoy yourself and learn the stuff that we all learn when we have our first go...and to see if you want to continue with the sport. If the first race is a suffer fest and you don't feel like you're a part of the party, you're a lot less likely to go back for more. Triathlon can be a very enjoyable and lifestyle-altering pursuit, so I personally hope you love it and decide to do more.

Good luck!

A sprint is an endurance race.

For me, last year, my sprints were approximately:

6-8 minutes swimming

1 hour biking

35-45 Running

It takes endurance to complete an event that takes 90 minutes or more.

Good idea about selecting which race and then using my effort to turn up the intensity.  I can play several hours of racquetball, but that start, stop change of pace and intensity does not match how i am approaching this idea of a steady effort triathlon.  I am planning on the longer, flatter course.  This triathlon is a large part of the motivation that kept me off the couch so much this winter.  I want this event to be a serious challenge that I should should finish and feel strong (albeit slow) without feeling totally wiped by the hills and becoming  that sufferfest.

It's about time to get warm enough to bike comfortably outside and they are building a new rec center only a mile from me and that pool should be open by May.  I'm looking forward to ramping up my workouts into a training schedule in multiple events.

Yes, all triathlons, even 'sprints' are endurance events in my book...

For me the event has to be 4 hours or more to be consider and endurance event. Don't get me wrong a sprint triathlon is difficult (when raced correctly) but it is too fast to be considered an endurance event IMO.

TO me endurance is all relative....To a IM finisher, a sprint is not an 'endurance event.' But for someone new to training, I think it would be endurance. Frig, to some people walking up 2 flights of stairs is endurance. Its all relative.....

Heck, in the world of running a 5k runner can be viewed as an endurance athlete when compared to an 400m runner. Yes, a sprint distance tri is an endurance event. It's a particularly tough endurance event as well... especially when it is raced properly (meaning at redline, the entire way through). I know many IM finishers who do not like racing sprints b/c they can't handle the level of intensity for that long (long being the key word equiv. to endurance).

Congrats on making a decision to enter into the world of triathlons! Enjoy the wild ride... whatever distance you choose to do!

The short answer is yes! Of course it is relative to who you are talking to.... an IM athelete may very well say no - but compared to the endeavors of 99% of the world - it's and easy yes! :-) Enjoy and best of luck

Have fun with it!!

At 225 - I always lean toward longer and flatter over hills - heck even at 202 I lean that way unless I really like the event.  Then again, I really don't like to climb when my weight is back up to 225 like it is now.

As for the endurance question  Yes and No.   It depends upon where you are at the time.  Four years ago it was an endurance event, in 2007 it was just a fast training day, and right now, it would be an endurance event again Frown

It most certainly is. Since you go as hard as possible the entire way, it also hurts alot.  A very good triathlete I know fears sprints more than half-iron man races. Welcome to BT, congrats on your weightloss and stopping smoking.  Jump in and dont worry abot results.  Practice transitions and try to get at least 1 open water swim (OWS) in before your race.  Best.

"a endurance event has to last more than 4 hours" I guess a marathon is not an endurance event? Most sprints take me just over an hour to finish. Going flat out for an hour takes endurance, may not be as hard as a IM but still considered an endurance event by me.

I personally would take the flat course any day -- unless it has a nasty headwind. Good thing about hills when you're Athena or Clydes is going down them.

Shoot!  Anything longer than 1 minute going flat out is an "endurance event" in my book!

A sprint triathlon is most definitely an endurance event; anything that lasts longer than two minutes is fueled primarily by the aerobic system so a sprint triathlon definitely fits the bill.

I would highly recommend that everyone (unless they have a good endurance sport background) starts with a sprint just to find out what triathlon is all about; there are many who do a longer event as their first but I think starting small is the way to go.

Good luck with your training and race,

Shane

I think anything beyound a sprint for the last beverage an endurance race.  Kidding aside, it is relative.  I consider a sprint an endurance race, or everyone would be doing them and they wouldn't have to train.  But it is all relative to one's perspective.
