Pre-race routine:

I arrived at our motel the night before and got settled in about 10 p.m. Checked the weather channel and turned in. Up at just before 0700. Had pancakes and bacon w/ oj about 3 hrs before race. Went back to my room, had a nice hot shower and packed up my gear to head to the race to register. Checked in at the race a little after 0800, got my timing chip, and body marked. Set up my transition area and was able to get an aisle spot about 1/2 way into the transition zone. Was pretty cold, so I laid out some extra layers just in case. Took a gel about 1 hour before the event was to start.
Event warmup:

Started with a very light jog for 3/4 - 1 mile. Went inside to the facility to stretch. Probably spent a good 15-20 minutes slowly warming and stretching my entire body. It was pretty cold outside so I wanted to be nice and loose. Also, the race organizers swithced the order so we wouldn't go out on the bike in 48 degree weather dripping wet. So I had to really change my mental run through of going from a run to the bike and finishing with the swim. Opted to start with tights on since it was a bit to cold for me and I didn't want to waste time trying to get them on before the bike. Now I was ready and the event kicked off on time.
Swim
  • 08m 53s
  • 500 meters
  • 01m 47s / 100 meters
Comments:

I managed to pass several people without any problems. I was more fatigued than anticipated and my form suffered a bit. I was really expecting to swim it in at least 8:30, but that would have been at the start of the race. Goggles fogged as soon as I came in from outside (48 degrees to 82 deg), don't think there is anything I could do about that. Rear deltoids were really tight since I wasn't able to get a swim warmup in before the race.
What would you do differently?:

Longer push and glide off the walls.

Next pool swim, I will hit the end of the lane I'm in and when I push off, I'll end up gliding down the next lane. That would be much faster than touching the wall and swimming under each rope and then taking off.
That may have been where I lost some time.

Would have done a swim warmup, but didn't want to get wet before the race since it was so cold. Also, didn't get there early enough.
Transition 1
  • 00m 49s
Comments:

This was actually a transition from run to bike. Running shoes off first, cycling shoes on next. Windbreaker on and went w/o the extra layer as I was plenty warm w/ one underarmour layer. Skull cap the helmet and I was off. Clipped in just outside transition and took off.
What would you do differently?:

Once I get the a new pair of shoes, I'll begin practicing leaving them clipped in. For now, I don't believe I would change anything. However, in the warmer weather, I'm going to be wearing a trisuit, so there will be no changing of clothes.
Bike
  • 29m 13s
  • 10.5 miles
  • 21.56 mile/hr
Comments:

I had a good ride overall. However, starting with the run made me a bit more fatigued than I was used to. My legs were wanting me to settle in rather than hammer on the last third of the course. For such a short distance, I felt like I should have been able to hammer the whole way. Also, my windbreaker was great for temp control, but felt like a parachute to slow me down.
What would you do differently?:

No windbreaker.

Keep working hard on my limiter the run so it doesn't suffer from a hard bike.

More miles on the bike. Come on warm weather and longer daylight hours. Add a bit more work on flat fast tempo rides.
Transition 2
  • 00m 55s
Comments:

Came in hell bent for leather. Hopped off just outside the transition and ran with cycling shoes on. Racked bike w/o problem and stripped down to trishorts. Grabbed goggles, watch and headed for the pool. While I was running to pool, strapped on watch and hit start as soon as I hit the water so I could get my swim split(my watch said 08:36). Hopped in and took off.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 23m 52s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 42s  min/mile
Comments:

Ran with my garmin which helped me since my "internal pace" has been set for slower longer runs all winter. Was able to run a PR. Could have gone a bit faster, but I think the rest of my race would have really suffered. It was hard to judge how hard to go since the run was first. Pretty much ran my race which allowed me to catch a ton of people on the bike. Felt strong and no aches and pains.
What would you do differently?:

My times, although better, continue to show that running is my BIG limiter. Just have to keep working on getting that time down.
Post race
Warm down:

Easy stretch and nutrition.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not having ever done a race in reverse order. My run, although a PR, still lags way behind others in my age group. Those who swim and bike as fast as me, continue to run 1-2 minutes/mile faster (that's a lot of minutes). My weight is at an all time low and finally at my initial goal. I am having my %body fat checked this week. May try to slim down another 5-10 lbs. We'll just see.

Event comments:

Had a great time and plan on returning if my life schedule allows it. Would like to have a relaxed run through in the traditional order before my first key race.

Performance: Average
Cramp in bottom of foot on 2nd 50. Was able to work it out by slowing my turns down a bit and stretching my foot on the wall when I pushed off.
Suit: Trisuit- desoto
Course: Was a 500m serpentine swim on a beautiful LCM pool. As soon as you entered the pool area, you slipped into lane one and took off. People were pretty spread out, so I did not experience any "traffic jams".

Performance: Good
Wind: Little
Course: Moderate hills. For me, it was pretty challenging to maintain my speed with the hills that we had. Not terrible, but enough that I was doing a lot of gear changing to keep my legs feeling good. This course did take some out of me even though it was short. Was pretty tired too from running a PR on the preceding 5k.

Race results showed me with a 7:41 split which is a PR for me.
Course: Nice rolling hills. Nothing too steep. Nice 800m downhill to the finish. Went through residential areas with volunteers clearly marking the turns. Water/gatorade at mile 1 and 2. Police controlled any major intersections which were few. Didn't have to think about anything but my race.

great job to you! reverse order throws me off a bit too, this is my 2nd tri, both have been reverse.  i dont like leaving the swim til the end...  i feel like i hold back in the others to keep a little something for my worst event.  yeah, i wore the tri suit.  it hides the chub!  i had other stuff over it, it was a tad chilly out for the first 2 events.  good luck in the next two of them, maybe i'll see you up there

I wish a 7:21 run pace was my limiter.
Great job!

Nice job. I like the idea of a reverse race. I'm a much stronger runner then swimmer and my bike is probably only average.

You did a great job! Nothing wrong with your run. Took me forever to realize it was a reverse tri and how your goggles ended up outside to get fogged up! (It takes me a while, but eventually I catch on). Anyway excellent race!Sharon
