Metal tacks scattered on road to sabotage Aviva Ironman triathlon
Posted: 22 March 2009 2128 hrs

SINGAPORE: A sabotage attempt marred the Aviva Ironman Singapore triathlon on Sunday.

While the cycling leg of the race was going on, some metal tacks were scattered on the road near the Keppel Flyover.

One witness told Channel NewsAsia about 30 to 40 participants had their bike tyres punctured by the tacks and had to drop out of the triathlon as a result.

In response to media queries, event organiser Hi-Tri said it cleared up the metal tacks immediately after being told of the incident.

It said few competitors were affected as the incident occurred near the end of the bike race.

Race director Graeme Hannan said it was a deliberate sabotage attempt and it was a shame that such mischief-makers have marred an otherwise great race.

Yeah, this happens occasionally.  Most of the time by kids being stupid.  But there have been incidents where local residents were pizzed off that the event went by their door and they messed up the road on purpose to get back at the organizers.

Sucks for all the participants.

That's horrible.  It shouldn't be surprising, but I'm still shocked that someone would do something like that.

You really have to wonder how people were raised to EVER think that would be an okay thing to do.

That SUX!

At the inaugural Savageman 70.3 in Western MD, which has CRAZY climbs and SERIOUS technical descents, the bike course had been pre-marked with signs indicating an approaching sharp turn during the descents.  The course was not closed, and all of the signs were removed from the course by similarly idiotic local residents, which resulted in multiple crashes.

It never ceases to amaze me how such mischief makers don't recognize the potential to kill someone by such actions.

WOW!  Thats brave.  I don't think Singapore deals with this kind of stuff lightly.  A good caning will fix the problem.
