So, on a ride with my wife today, I ended up in a confrontation with a psycho on the local bike path whose wife rollerbladed right into my path, even after I'd warned them I was coming up from behind. Managed to hit the brakes and unclip and neither go down or hit her. But he got in my face and things escalated from there. I was very conscious not to touch him or make any threatening gestures or statements, but he was pretty likely high on something and when he started threatening me, my wife called 911. While she was talking to the operator, he headbutted me in the face. No real damage (very small chip on a front tooth and small cut on my nose from my sunglasses) and he backed off a bit after that (and me finally throwing down my bike at that point). There was a witness and when I went to flag down a passing city bus, he and his wife and another woman with them split. I followed on my bike (at a distance) but lost them in a nearby neighborhood. Cops took my statement (when they arrived almost 20 mins later) and the witness's name, but I don't expect to hear anything more about this.

People always caution not to escalate "bike rage" confrontations--and that's definitely the way to go in my book--but those are usually drive-by situations where the a-hole is taillights moments after throwing something at you or such. In this case, I had to stop and clipout and this guy got right in my face immediately (as did his wife). At a certain point, I have to say, life isn't really worth a lot if you eat crap from some random dirtbag just because he threatens you. If there was a weapon in evidence, maybe I'd be singing a different tune, but this was a pretty difficult situation to just walk away from (both practically speaking and in terms of personal dignity).

Clueless pedestrians and cars...two reasons I'll never really like road biking all that much.

Good job staying calm.  Definitely the best way to handle that situation.  Not sure I'd be able to do that after getting headbutted.

Never had a confrontation like that, though I've been thrown verbal abuse from drivers and such in the past.

At any rate, a piece of advise for all is to keep your bike between you any wild animal/person.  It is not threatening and you can always use it to shield yourself from attack.

Well done man, I would have probably broken my bike on his face and gotten in trouble.  Seriously, hats off to you

Yeah, I was actually taught that years ago in a self-defense seminar...in this case, unfortunately, the guy was literally in my face before I could even get off the bike. It's definitely something people should do when they can if they're confronted or attacked on a bike. I was really in a disadvantage in the situation still standing over my bike.

wow. crazy story.  If they frequent that bike path there is a chance you may see them again.  Anyway, kudos for taking the high road and maintaining your composure.

Nice job staying calm, I would have probably punched the guy in the face and beat him with a stick

A "headbutt"? I thought that was just something people do on TV. What kind of an idiot uses his head as a weapon? Good job keeping your cool. Anybody stupid enough to headbutt someone probably carries weapons as well. One day he'll get into the face of the wrong person, and then he'll be a statisitic. Natural selection at its finest. Much better than getting a slap on the wrist from a compaint with your name on it.

Good job in not wailing on him, you're a better man than me (I know I would have once he tried to headbutt me - and I probably would have laid out the b-tch too - I'm an equal opportunity azz whooper).  Luckily no one was really hurt bad.

Yet another reason I try to avoid "bike paths" at all costs.

Lots of nutjobs out there, and you just never know when you're going to run into one.  Glad things worked out alright.

Can't say I expected a headbutt, that's for sure. Actually was a good thing I had a helmet on and he aimed a little high...between the helmet and the rubber pads on my sunglasses, it probably saved me a broken nose.

Much as I'd like to think I'd have taken the guy out, he was probably high (bad area with a lot of drug dealing on the street) and was a bit bigger than me. I wasn't going to back down, but I definitely wasn't about to escalate things. Then there's the fact that I was in cycling shoes and wearing gloves...not prime fighting gear, really. He was mostly just posturing for his wife...I was actually surprised he hit me (nobody's ever actually hit me in a situation like that since at least 20 years ago), but not surprised he didn't escalate it from there.

You’re a better man then me..........I very rarely let someone during a confrontation get within what I call my inner space which is about a arms reach. But that’s just me being from the northeast. Been suckered a few times so I know what its like. Glade you didn’t get hurt.

Next time, get off your bike and get in the front of the bike.  Then grab the handle bars and throw the back wheel at the the guy and swing the big chainring...hope it doesn't hit the guy.

Trust me...I've lived in big cities for over 40 years and know all about protecting my space (proactively and otherwise). Wasn't an option in this case...had to come to a screeching halt and clipout right in the middle of these people after the chick skated right into my path. This psycho (and he was definitely either a little crazy or high or both) took exception to the near miss, shall we say. He was literally right next to me and I was still standing over my bike after the near miss...and his a-hole wife was in my face on the other side. No real opportunity to do any of the things you're "supposed" to do in these situations...like "swinging my bike" like the next poster suggested...that's--with all due respect--a pretty laughable suggestion if you saw the actual geography of the confrontation.

Why do you hate your bike?

Seriously good job keeping your cool. I would have took a swing at him for sure.
