Yep.

Here's my attempt at putting together the new bike route. It shows as about 7/10ths of a mile short, but that's probably due to my route mapping. Keith, let me know if that looks right.

It's very close to the course map. We're going to come in through the Star of Texas Rodeo Gate on Decker Lake Road, which adds some distance. Also, probably going to take a left on County Line Road and a right on Voelker, which adds 3/10 of a mile.

I drove the course, and came out to 55.9. Buddy drove it, and it came out to 56.2. So, it's as close as you can typically get it.

I'm also toying with where T1 will be. We may move it further down towards the dam, which adds a bit to the bike course. It's also grass and flat. Going out there on Friday to determine the best spot for it.

I'm trying to avoid putting T1 up where it was, as it's prone to being dusty/dry (duh) if we don't get any rain. The lower fields stay grassy. It also allows for a shorter run from the water to T1.

So, yes, two transitions....about .7 mile apart. One will be at the park, the other will be at the Arena. There's a large fenced in area on the back side of the arena, half of it is covered. That's where T2 will be.

It's great for a couple of reasons. You'll be parking at the Expo Center in the AM, and be bused to the swim start (there will be 3X the number of buses this year). But, you'll finish at the Expo Center, right next to where you parked. No long walk back to your car after the race

We'll transport your T1 gearbag back to the Arena, so no need to go back to the Park. Much more convenient.

PLUS, you'll finish in the Arena! It's awesome.... It also makes the bike course better, as we use more of the roads with better pavement.

I think the race will be MUCH better this year, which is really saying something. Our goal is to make this the best race in the world, so we're making these changes to improve it. It'll also be a big hit with the family members

Not doing the race this year...but BLESS YOU for making this change.  I think walking back to my car was the absolute worst part of the day...

Keith,

Did I hear something about RV parking at the expo center? Let me know if there is a registration process.

Thanks,

Ok, so I am confused, this race is not taking place on 10-18-09 like it has in the listing here.  Also, there is another Half Ironman in Austin on the 25th under a different race listing on this thread. . .

They both take me to this website.  . . .  http://www.ironmanlonghorn.com/

Clearly the race is for October 25th.

I'm curious how hilly the bike and run courses are for the Longhorn?  This would be my first 70.3, so of course I'm a bit nervous and I don't want to bite off more that I can chew the first time around.

Longhorn Ironman 70.3 in Austin is definitely Oct. 25th - it was originally scheduled for the 18th - but we had to move it because of a football game... there would not have been any hotel rooms!

hills are soo subjective... I come from NH and I don't think it's that hilly... but if you come come from a flat area any types of hill no matter how small if there are enough them are a lot....

If I still have a pic from the bottom, I'll upload it. It's the hill that will make you curse your parents for creating you....and you have to run up it twice.

+1  What is this "quadzilla?"  Sounds like it would be a really tough uphill during the last bit of the run...

Just booked my room for the race. Went through hotwire and booked a downtown Austin hotel 3.5 star for $89 per night. Turned out to be the Radisson. Can't complain since the hotel site lists the rooms at $171 per night. Just letting anyone know who is looking for a deal and a hotel downtown.
