Age Group Rank = 1/6
Pre-race routine:

My daughter raced before me so we left a little early for the noon start. Got Becca and my transitions areas set up and then watched her race. She did well, I'm so proud of her.
Met Rick (WyldChyld) and Dave (Gone) from BT. They both had awesome first races.
Event warmup:

1 gel, then quick 150 in pool. Stand in line. This was a self seeded swim. They have signs with times and then you talk to people around there to see where you should start.
Swim
  • 05m 14s
  • 300 yards
  • 01m 44s / 100 yards
Comments:

Jumped in and felt pretty good. My new tri top is slightly too big around the waist and will need to alter somehow. My turns are much improved and I feel I made up time here, still no flip turns but faster open turns.
With 2 laps to go, I caught the person in front of me, they waited at the wall and let me pass. Then I feel someone on my feet. Tap, tap, tap I'm figuring it must be the guy I just passed and he is trying to draft. (Ends up it was a girl that I passed and she just stayed on my feet, Imagine that, someone drafting off of me in the pool?)
Short swim, felt pretty good.
What would you do differently?:

More time in pool. Took 7 seconds off of last years time and I had put a lot more time in the pool over winter prior to last year.
Transition 1
  • 00m 42s
Comments:

Dropped about 10 seconds off of my usual time here. Put bike shoes on in transition and just hurried more than usual.
What would you do differently?:

My best T1 yet, I think.
Bike
  • 34m 51s
  • 13 miles
  • 22.38 mile/hr
Comments:

Pushed on the bike. About 2.5 mph faster than last year on same course. Little uncomfortable in my shoulders, but that's ok for these short races. Crosswind both out and back. Passed quite a few people and only got passed once by a pro (after further review, the pro started before me, so it wasn't him who passed me) who was only doing the swim and bike for some reason. Kinda cool having a pro at this race, but he declined a raffle prize because of his pro status.
Took a gel at about mile 11.
What would you do differently?:

Longer TT's and more time in saddle, both will come with the warmer weather.
Transition 2
  • 00m 41s
Comments:

Same as T1, fastest T2 by about 30 seconds. Wore the Zoots without socks, saved a ton of time in T2.
What would you do differently?:

Practice
Run
  • 24m 40s
  • 3.2 miles
  • 07m 43s  min/mile
Comments:

A little confused by my HR, looks like I could have pushed a little harder. Not the run that I wanted, but it is a tough run course. Took a little water twice on the course. Need to do more bricks, didn't run great off of the bike.
What would you do differently?:

More bricks.
Post race
Warm down:

Chatted as usual, then ate.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

First race of the season, hills, lack of taper. Training right now is focused on Indy 1/2 marathon, lots of running, not a lot of swim or bike.

Event comments:

Very well organized, especially for a 2nd year race. Lots of volunteers. Very friendly people. Will be back.

Great job out there! I recognized your name from BT when they called you up for the award, congratulations!  Thanks for the comment on my race report, that truck at the turn was hard to deal with.  I am also doing the Indy 1/2 in two weeks.
