Pre-race routine:

Jess and I drove to Chattanooga the night before. I was a bit anxious to get moving that morning so I was up at 4:45 and out the door by 5:30. We were the third car to arrive and the first bikes in transition.
Event warmup:

I wanted to make sure I stayed plenty loose so I ran about 3/4 of a mile on the course and stretched out a bit. I made sure to get in the water for about 10 minutes to make sure I was ready to go.
  • 07m 54s
  • 656 yards
  • 01m 12s / 100 yards

My goal was to jump on the feet of the lead group and hang on for dear life. I lined up to the far right on the front. It work perfectly. I got a good jump, sighted to my left so I could watch the leaders and slowly made my way over. I was in the main group for the first 200 before they began to pull away. I couldn't keep up. I then realized that I was leading the second group, so I slowed up and let them come around. No sense in doing all the work.

The swim was definitely short but I couldn't tell at the time. I was extremely winded. I don't think I have ever worked that hard in the water.
What would you do differently?:

I need to concentrate more. I know I can ride the hip. I just need to execute it.
Transition 1
  • 02m 17s

Transition was a LONG uphill run. I was still winded and the hill didn't help. I had all kinds of trouble getting my arms out of the wetsuit. When I reached the top of the hill, I saw the leaders heading out on the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. It was an ok transition. I was a bit flustered due to the long run. My transition was the 14th fastest
  • 38m 45s
  • 14 miles
  • 21.68 mile/hr

My goal was to try to lead the bike. I knew I was down about 10 positions but I made every effort to catch the leader. Within the first 5 minutes, I caught a couple of people. I then just set my sites on the next person in front of me.

I found the course pretty challenging for a sprint. There were two groups of hills that required out of the saddle climbing. Other than that, it was fast. It felt really odd to ride most of the course alone. A few guys tried to hang but they drifted back on the other side of the hills. And going across big intersections at that rate of speed was awesome.

Coach wanted me to hold 240-260 watts. I averaged 305...oops! :)
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Maybe some more hill training I think it was nearly flawless.
Transition 2
  • 00m 44s

Transition was at the top of a decent hill so I didn't try to get out of my shoes. I just hopped off. There were only 4 bikes in transition when I got there.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. Might get my feet out next time. Stop wearing socks with my shoes.
  • 19m 47s
  • 2.7 miles
  • 07m 20s  min/mile

I knew my run might suffer from the hammerfest on the bike. I also knew that I didn't want to be run down. Due to the terrain, I never got into a solid groove. I ran the first 1.5 miles without seeing ANYONE. That was a weird feeling. I saw the leaders on the return. When I hit the next big hill I was able to see two guys behind me.

At the two mile mark he caught me and I wasn't able to go with him. I began pushing the pace until I hit a hill. As I cruised up, I planned to make my next move but instead I turned the corner and found the finish line. Apparently, someone forgot to put out a cone and it sent everyone on a short route.
What would you do differently?:

I only got passed once. I wish I had pushed the pace more since I lost some overall spots to a few masters athletes.
Post race
Warm down:

I crossed the finish line only to see Jess running out of transition. I sprinted down to catch and cheer her on. Then I just chilled and watched the race.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nothing. I had the race I wanted to have

Event comments:

I thought the venue was perfect for a sprint tri and only about 10 miles north of Chattanooga. The course was probably the hardest I have ever done for a sprint. The terrain made it plenty challenging.

The race was very low key and not as organized as most of the larger productions that I am accustom to. The run course needed a bit more direction as it had tons of technical turns. Overall, I enjoyed myself and would gladly go back
