Sunny
Total Time = 1h 21m 55s
Overall Rank = 26/89
Age Group = 30-39
Age Group Rank = 1/10
Pre-race routine:

Iced Capp at Tim's before we left Saskatoon at 5 a.m. Apparently I took a swipe at my husband when he tried to wake me up at 4. :) Got to event, registered, numbered, got set up and wandered around aimlessly until the pre-race meeting.
Event warmup:

Stretch my left piriformis muscle. Tried to deactivated a trigger point in my rectus femoris. Did 2 lengths of warm-up before swim start.
Swim
  • 14m 55s
  • 750 meters
  • 01m 59s / 100 meters
Comments:

I had a hard time with the swim. I'm not in good swim shape, although I'm not sure how much lack of sleep and a 4-hour bike ride 36-hours before contributed. All the competitors in my swim lane were courteous and etiquette was faithfully observed. Very nice.
What would you do differently?:

Swim a whole lot more.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

I don't think I could've made this transition quicker without learning to get into my bike shoes on the bike.
Bike
  • 42m 10s
  • 20 kms
  • 28.46 km/hr
Comments:

The first lap I could feel the trigger point and my legs were more tired than I thought, but I just pushed hard anyway. I passed a lot of people (on Cervelos), but was only passed by 2 guys.
What would you do differently?:

More sprinting practice on the bike. Most of what I've been doing is distance because of Ironman training.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

I had trouble getting my bike shoes off.
What would you do differently?:

Use my speed laces on my running shoes.
Run
  • 24m 51s
  • 5 kms
  • 04m 58s  min/km
Comments:

My legs were like lead when I started to run. I've never had that happen before, so this was a first. I was very slow for the first 1/3 of the course as I felt soooo sluggish. I felt better for the middle of the course, but couldn't remember if there was one or 2 laps, so I didn't put as much steam into it as I could have. Maybe.
What would you do differently?:

Not do a sprint race so close after a 4-hour bike ride.
Post race
Warm down:

One word...food.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of sleep. Not enough swim training. Too soon after a hard training ride for Ironman.

Event comments:

As I was telling my husband BEFORE I got second in women's overall...I thought this race was extraordinarily well organized. The rules were well outlined, the bike course was extremely well-marshalled, the volunteers were fantastic, the events were on time (if not a little early), the post race meal was fantastic and the other competitors were enthusiastic and courteous. The first-place female competitor was quite gracious. My swim lane group was marvelously courteous.

Course: It was a 4-loop course on the roads at the University of Regina. There were no hills. It was extremely well-marshalled. Kudos to the volunteers! The course was very well swept, especially considering the high traffic area. THe volunteers spray painted the potholes. Bless them.
