Pre-race routine:

Run around and set up transition.
Event warmup:

No real warm up, just swam for about 2 minutes.
Swim
  • 25m 58s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 35s / 100 yards
Comments:

I really need to wait a few moments at these big races to start swimming. I know I could have a better overall time if I didn't try to go out so fast. I end up getting ran over about 100m into it.
What would you do differently?:

Start out towards the back of the waive.
Transition 1
  • 03m
Comments:

I took forever getting my socks and shoes on. My feet had so much dirt and rocks on them. Then I didn't want to sit on the dirt to get my shoes on and I was wobbly from swimming. It was pretty pathetic.
What would you do differently?:

A lot of stuff. I will really need to get it together for my next race.
Bike
  • 1h 41m 38s
  • 18.6 miles
  • 10.98 mile/hr
Comments:

This is the toughest mountain bike course I have ever done. It was also one of the least fun courses as well. I had issues shifting. My bike wouldn't go into the small chain ring in the front.
What would you do differently?:

Be in better shape and make sure my bike was shifting before the race.
Transition 2
  • 01m 38s
Comments:

I just wasn't with it in transition this race. I was just so tired I didn't really care how fast I changed my shoes.
What would you do differently?:

FOCUS.
Run
  • 1h 00m 45s
  • 6.5 miles
  • 09m 21s  min/mile
Comments:

I wish I would have been able to run more. I tried to really haul butt down the hills as much as I could.
What would you do differently?:

Train on more hills.
Post race
Warm down:

Pack up transition and ride my bike back to the car.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My fitness. I thought I was in great shape until I did this race.

Event comments:

This was a really good experience. Now I have a better idea of what to expect when going to XTERRA. I should expect to be torchered.

“I thought this was one of the hardest XTERRA races ever,” said McQuaid after the win.  “There was just no place to hide and no place to rest and not a second to catch my breath.  I’ve never been more tired in my whole life.  -XTERRA World Champ, Melanie McQuaid

Well done on your finish.  I love XTERRA races, usually because of the bike course, but this one doesnt sound so great.  Hopefully your next experience is much more fun and interesting!!

I agree.  One of the ugliest and least fun courses I have ever riden.  Even the single track through the cat tails sucked.

Great job with the finish though!

As bad as it was, I'm still hooked on XTERRA....

It was a terrible bike and then the run just killed whatever legs you had left - good job though and congrats - you rode the course twice as fast as I did!
