I went out for a long ride today.  The weather was beautiful, I was riding country farm roads with hardly any traffic...and then I got chased by 2 dogs (at the same time).  I was kind of going up a hill, so I couldn't go any faster.  He was really coming at me with a vicious bark and I just screamed out of fear.  That held him up for a second, so when he came at me again I screamed again.  A few more crazy, banshee screams and I was out of danger.

About 30 min. later another dog starts running up to me.  This one seemed friendly, but I was taking no chances and used my crazy, banshee scream again.  It only took one for this guy.

Besides screaming like a girl (and I can say that because I am a girl) every time I see a dog, what should I do? Any tips?

Mace or pepper spray works well.

I find shouting at them to sit, or a loud sharp "off!" actually works pretty well. When I get 2 at once, it's usually more like 'oh fer s*%#s sake!' and a 'dog sprint' interval. LOL

If you are riding with someone that uses  mace or pepper spray or whatever, be sure to ride in front of them!

I think I'd just yell "NO" in a low mean voice. Most dogs know what that means. If that doesn't work then scream at the dog in the lowest meanest voice you can muster.

Why would you do anything different? Seems like your banshee screm worked great. I was chased by a big ole country dog last year. I pretty much did the same thing- scream like a girl. Only my scream was preceded by an expletive that starts with the letter "s.''

an air horn for a boat...........buy one at a boat store..........wait for them to get close before discharging. they make some freakin LOUD ones..

additionally i was told to use full strength amonia in a squirt bottle and go for the eyes. i was told that it is safe for the dog and safer for you than pepper spray. if pepper spray catches the wind and gets in your eyes, the dog will win... :-)!.....ammonia leaves you both functional and with the right spray bottle you get greater distance and multiple/repeated shots.....

your final option is to contact your county sheriff and report the address and dog as a nuiscance. the sheriff can pay the house a visit and put pressure on the owner. multiple reports and the dog and be put to sleep....

that being said, i like the 9mm option best... :-)

hope this helps....

Wasp spray works really good as well.  Learned that one from a mail carrier I know who has to deal with wild dogs.  The stuff has a long range and hitting the dog in the face will stop it cold.

Sounds like you made a good decision doing what you did.

Carrying something specific is trickier than it sounds, like most things it should be practiced. remembering where you have the pepper spray, getting the release off while trying to keep the dogs at bay, making sure you spray them and not yourself or someone else, it has some challenges.

A water bottle i've heard can be used to deter them as well, something most of us have some experience taking out and using,,,,, not necessarily on the dogs but it doesn't carry much risk compared to mace. I'd use the bottle with the gatorade if I had a choice . But I"m just plain mean.

If you get in a situation where you end up off the bike try to back yourself up against something and use the bike to keep the dogs away from you.

Glad your experience we as well as it did, be careful out there.

Given that the dog is probably reading the situation as winning the chase, you might also consider going TOWARDS the dog, while either screaming or shouting "NO".  Also another reason to carry a small bike pump along with CO2 - you can yield it as a baton if needed, decreasing the risk of getting your hands in the way.

I say flip the tables on them.

Start chasing them and screaming! Ok maybe not, but I think running/biking only feeds their chase instinct... I would carry throw a glob of BBQ sauce on one of the dogs, so the other one eats him, thus giving me a chance to slip away.

I'm a dog person/amateur dog trainer as well as someone who's been menaced by poorly-trained dogs many, many times...

Most dogs will back off if you holler at them.  A high-pitched girly scream is not the best way to go, because it will make you seem like a terrified prey animal and thus trigger further prey/chase instincts.  Dogs love to chase joggers and bikers partially because of territory guarding and partially because of their instincts to chase prey.  If you pitch a "NO!  BAD DOG!"  or a "GO LAY DOWN!" as loud and low-pitched as you can, most dogs will back off.  You don't want to come off scared as much as you want to come off assertive and tough, someone that the dog doesn't want to mess with.  The majority of dogs will back off if you tell them to get lost in language they can understand.

If the dog ignores this and keeps coming at you, squirt something in its face.  A well-aimed squirt from your water bottle will probably be unpleasant/unexpected enough to stop the dog in its tracks for a few seconds if you're on the bike, which might be all you need.  More unpleasant, and thus more effective, deterrents include a squirt gun full of diluted ammonia or diluted lemon juice.  I usually go with the lemon juice, because the ammonia can give the dog chemical burns and I'm too soft-hearted to burn the dog.  Pepper spray is the most effective thing of all, especially if you're jogging, but it's really difficult to aim pepper spray when you're on a bike, especially if there's any kind of wind at all.  Chances are you'll totally miss the dog, and in the worst-case scenario, you'll end up spraying yourself.  Then you will be totally blind, in wicked pain, probably crashing your bike, with an angry dog tearing a piece out of your shorts.

Also, make a note of which house the dog came out of, so that you can have a "chat" with its owners (and maybe the police) later on.  You should be able to bike and run without being afraid that Cujo's going to have you for dinner.

LOL.  I love the "dog sprint" interval.  it is definitely one of the best motivational tools, and i just happened to be on a flat enough area and in a decent gear for sprinting.   Having not read all the great advice here 1st, i had to dog chasing (me being the chasee) incidents on this mornings ride.

I will definitely work on my banshee yell.  At least maybe the dog will fall over laughing.

Check your leash laws, if the owner is in violation report him on every occurence. I've found you have to be persitent for animal control to take any action if the situation doesn't involve injury. Report it for what it is, which is an  "attack" by an unleashed dog.

How ironic. Just got back from a ride with the same question/issue. Two muts came from my left on the way out but i was ahead enough and cruising pretty good so no big deal. Had to turn around and come back about a mile later. Took a break to hydrate and consider my options. No options other than water bottle and in Arizona heat no way in hell So, decided to go back opposite side of street against traffic until I reached safety...Best laid plans...

Those two damn dogs recruited two more - two on each side of the road waiting for me and my very exposed calf muscles. Decided to do the dog interval, as so named above, hit about 28MPH and HR 170 and swerved directly at the two that started this fight. They paused and the other two were cleary the dumb ones so made it through - not going that route again

just thought I would share - love the suggestions, thanks guys and gals

Normally yelling in a low mean voice works for me, if not, a squirt in the face with the water bottle does it. You do lose some water or sport drink, but better than teeth or the road in your face! Maybe I will try the banshee scream next time.

I got chased yesterday too. Was enjoying the most beautiful country ride and my fastest ride of the year when this medium sized dog starts after me. I was on a long flat stretch and was cruising along at about 22mph so he was working pretty hard. I started to pull away and decided to slow a little to see how far I could make him run. He actually stayed with me for a good quarter mile. I was hoping I could coax him into a heart attack.

After my last serious dog incident (I fell hard), I've started slowing down and coming to a stop if I have to with my bike between me and the dog.  Usually once they realize that I'm a human and not "prey" then they back off.  It takes a little more time out of my ride - but I'd rather shove my chainrings at a dog or squirt them with a waterbottle than be run off my bike and helpless again.

Check out this website.  A bit disturbing that you can get stun guns so cheaply (this is joke, I am not suggesting you cattle prod a dog)

Seriously, report the owner as was previously said.

It sounds like you did ok. I was on a country road a few weeks ago when a beagle sized dog took chase from the opposite side of the road. There was a car coming from the other direction that almost nailed him for me when he tried crossing the road. I was sort of disappointed that he didn't get what was coming to him, but later I think I would have felt bad. I sort of get in a bad mood when I am out on a long ride in the FL heat and humidity.

I just yell, "BAH! Go on!" and they usually look at me, then turn around and leave. Only BIG dogs keep chasing me until they get tired or get disinterested.

Make the dog roadkill!! J/K, spray the dog with your water bottle..they will either turn in fear or keep running to get some water

Same deal for me yesterday morning (long ride, back country road...) and I was chased by a dog and its' owner---well OK I guess it was really the dog coming after me and the owner doing after his dog---I was on a bit of an uphill also but managed to find another mph or so and figured the owner yelling/running after his dog was better then what I could do....
