Total Time = 1h 20m 25s
Overall Rank = 206/592
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 25/61
Pre-race routine:

Woke up. Ate a banana. Took a gel about 20 min. prior to race start.
Event warmup:

Ran very slowly for about a 1/2 mile. About 15 min prior to start, swam out past surf, which was very small, and back to make sure goggles and wetsuit felt good.
Swim
  • 13m 58s
  • 820 yards
  • 01m 42s / 100 yards
Comments:

Zigzaged a little on both the way out and back. Need to work on sighting a bit more in open water.
What would you do differently?:

Swim harder. This was my first triathlon and I probably could have gone a little harder in the swim. Felt I got into a zone which was comfortable, but for races, perhaps could take a little more pain. Now I know.
Transition 1
  • 02m 38s
Comments:

I think I ran passed my bike a little bit. Gettting up the hill to the transition area was a little harder than anticipated.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe use a more visible towel to spot.
Bike
  • 37m 12s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 20.05 mile/hr
Comments:

The bike was certainly my best event. The roads were a little wet from the fog / heavy overcast that persisted through the morning. I heard of riders going down, but didn't see any.
What would you do differently?:

Don't carry a full bottle of fluids. Maybe 3/4 or 1/2 full are about right for this distance. Maybe could have pushed a tad harder on the first loop (of two). I felt much more warmed up by the second loop, so perhaps will warm up on the bike before race next time. Get a tri bike.
Transition 2
  • 00m 57s
Comments:

Took a few extra seconds fitting the bike back on the rack amid all the gear lying around.
Run
  • 25m 37s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 14s  min/mile
Comments:

Probably too much drink given this distance. Was well hydrated the couple days prior. Had some more while setting up in transition, on the bike, and took some water on the way out of T2.
What would you do differently?:

Probably should have done without T2 water. Relatively new to running. Have mostly been building distance. Need to start working in speed training.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Run training (speed workouts needed). Even an incremental improvement in time here would have a significant impact in age group standings. Also need to work on navigation skills.

Great job on this being your first race. It was my first race in about 8 months so I was a bit rusty, but still enjoyed. Well I enjoyed everything but that run up to transition...

Thanks for the encouragement and sorry for the long delay on the response.  I'm kind of new to the forum thing, so I guess I need to get my settings set up right to get post notifications.

Yeah, transition from the beach to T1 was long and steep.  Although, after watching the Carlsbad Triathlon, I suppose it is better to run up a steep hill to transition than to have to bike out to face a steep hill.  At Carlsbad, I saw quite a few people crashing on their bikes trying to get situated before the steep climb which began immediately out of the transition area.

Overall, it was a lot of fun and a good introduction to triathlon.  I'm hooked.  Have several other races planned and am loving the training.
