Indeed! IMO, it's all part of Gary Bettman's evil plot to pick up one or two non-hockey fans while of the critical mass of regular viewers. |

Expert 878 Tallahassee, FL | Subject: RE: Wings - Pens! rkreuser - 2009-06-01 2:14 PM Two other interesting things: The league is shooting for consistency: they also recinded the automatic suspension of Carolina's Scott Walker in the Boston series. However, it is dumb in both situations to have a rule written in plain english and then you find a way to recind it. If they aren't going to follow the rule, they need to just get rid of it. If the purpose is as the league stated, to get rid of planned message sending, then rewrite the rule to say there will be an automatic review of any instigator penalty in the last 5 minutes. PS - I have no problem with the non-suspension. |

There's a YouTube clip you would enjoy: Pierre gets whacked with a stick by a guy getting checked into his between-the-benches booth. I'd find it for you, but can't get to YouTube from work. |

Expert 937 Traverse Cityish | Subject: RE: Wings - Pens! If the Penguins had a better goalie, this series would be a whole lot different right now. Good thing for us Wings fans, Fleury was good for two red wings assists in game one and managed to completely miss an easy knuckleball shot from darn near the blue line in game two. Not sure how long it will last, Fleury will get a fire going in him at some point, but for right now he's making Babcock's boys look pretty dominant. |

Master 1895 | Subject: RE: Wings - Pens! tluckey - 2009-06-01 10:13 AM Two Jennings Trophies. 10th in wins all-time, tied with Hasek and ahead of Barasso, and next year he'll pass Grant Fuhr. 3 Stanley Cups. And this years' Conn Smythe winner, in addition to owning the Pens the first two games. I guarantee you'd trade Osgood straight up for Fleury. I would not trade Osgood for Fleury - the upside with Fleury is too great and Osgood has benefited from playing on a great team. I think you could plug a lot of goalies into the Wings and they'd be successful. However, Osgood is showing this year and last that when it matters, he stops the pucks that have to be stopped (unlike Fleury - lot of soft goals this series). As for the Jennings trophies - i think he has Hasek and Vernon to thank for those. All his wins - played on some great Red Wings teams.
This has been debated over and over and over again in Detroit, but since this series is turning out to be less than anticipated (for me at least...I actually predicted it'd go 7 games), I'll drudge it up AGAIN: I don't understand why Osgood doesn't get the respect that other goalies get. Maybe it's because he's not as flashy. Maybe because he still looks like he's 17 years old. Maybe people remember the easy goals he has let in in playoffs past. I don't know. The guy has been around for, what, 15 years? He's won how many Stanley Cups? He's 2 games away from leading the Wings to another one and should be up for the Conn Smythe. They've tried to plug other goalies in and it hasn't worked: Manny Legace (whom I really liked), Cujo (GREAT goaltender), Jimmy Howard (still waiting for him to be the next great thing), and most recently Ty Conklin. No matter how great the team in front of you is...they have to trust and believe in you. That was the problem with Legace and Cujo. They didn't believe in them. The players believe in Osgood. They trust him. That makes all the difference in the world. You don't have to be flashy to be a great goaltender. I'd take Osgood on my team any day of the week. Plus...he beat the Sh#T out of Patrick Roy, so he'll always be good in my book.

I hear you there. Last playoff season is a prime example. We have Hasek in goal for the first two Nashville games in round 1, who plays just lights out hockey. We go to Nashville and drop the next two, so Babcock puts in Osgood for Game 5 and doesn't look back. Next thing you know, Osgood has led us to the Stanley Cup. I think he just gets overlooked because the guys playing in front of him have always been really good, it's easy for some to write off his good games as just a testament to the guys in front of him. Nelg - 2009-06-01 4:59 PM If the Penguins had a better goalie, this series would be a whole lot different right now. Not sure how long it will last, Fleury will get a fire going in him at some point, but for right now he's making Babcock's boys look pretty dominant. Yeah, I'm afraid you're right. The good thing is that, in my opinion, the Red Wings haven't really brought their A game for a full 60 minutes. There were patches during Games 1 and 2 when the Penguins clearly played better hockey. Hopefully when Fleury does get it going, we do too. |

Expert 878 Tallahassee, FL | Subject: RE: Wings - Pens! Dangit. If only we could have carried that 2nd period play into the 3rd period. Well, now it's a series again. I think the Red Wings wasted an effort, they held Crosby down pretty well other than the Power Play in the 3rd period, they just allowed too much secondary scoring. Only 3 shots out of #87, the Red Wings have to take advantage when that happens. Rumor is Datsyuk may be back for Game 4? Hopefully the 'Wings will bring 60 minutes of that 2nd period action on Thursday. Good game for the Pens. Here's hoping this series is just following last years script . |

The elbow to Franzen was another great missed call. I find it odd that they crack down on the stick horizontal on a guys body (not really in this series), but they let a blatent Too Many Men call and a Elbow call go. I think we're all familiar with the refs swallowing their whistles late in a game or in overtime, but I don't think they even bring their whistles to the rink with them. I would never let my child near Crosby if I saw him on the streets and I did not know who he was. |
