Pre-race routine:

Glad I set a backup alarm this morning bc the Blackberry alarm didn't go off. Still had plenty of time though. Grabbed a couple pieces of toast with PB, some Gatorade and headed out. Also tried sugarfree Red Bull in place of coffee this morning....nothing negative about this, but I'll stick with coffee from now on.
Event warmup:

Set up TA, did a little stretching. Probably should have done a light jog and maybe some more stretching to loosen up the legs a little more.
Swim
  • 09m 55s
  • 580 yards
  • 01m 43s / 100 yards
Comments:

I would love to know how they grouped the swim waves. The first 3 waves were all men and it seemed like they were grouped by age. My wave was nearly all men, myself and 4 other females. The wave after mine...all females. I've always been in mixed swim waves before, so this didn't really bother me...until we got going. This was by far the worst washing machine I've ever been in! At one point someone caught me in their stroke which pulled me under. This was also my first time using a wetsuit (which I could have done without). I felt a little constricted, but I think this will just take a little getting used to. I love OWS and even in races I'm usually really relaxed and calm, but I went into a bit of a panic today...heart rate went up and breathing was waaay off.
What would you do differently?:

Get used to swimming in a wetsuit, relax, and focus on breathing.
Transition 1
  • 02m 6s
Comments:

Wetsuit got caught up on my heel, but all in all it was easier getting it off than I imagined.
What would you do differently?:

Not get my heel stuck.
Bike
  • 36m 30s
  • 10 miles
  • 16.44 mile/hr
Comments:

All in all is was an decent ride for me. Biking, and specifically climbing hills, is definitely my limiter. My pace plumets when I hit the hills. On flats I held 18-20 mph consistenly and picked up some solid speed on the downhills. There was one big descent where I got it up to 35 mph, and remembered there was a sharp right turn at the bottom so I had to pull it back a bit. I'm getting a lot more comfortable picking up those speeds. I managed to avoid most of the potholes, but hit a monster pothole about 1.5 miles from the finish....shocked that I get a flat from that!
What would you do differently?:

Get better at climbing hills and get more comfortable with my aerobars
Transition 2
  • 00m 46s
Comments:

Rack was empty when I got back. Threw my bike on the rack, quickly changed shoes, grabbed my race belt and visor and put them on as I took off.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 26m 3s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 23s  min/mile
Comments:

My toes were a little numb on quads were heavy at first, but this is pretty typical for me. Took me about a mile to get my legs back. Started passing quite a few people, felt great by the halfway point and really picked up the pace on the way back in.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Post race
Warm down:

Loads of drinks and yummy snacks & fruit at the finish.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

More OWS practice, get more comfortable with the aerobars and spend more time in aero, and I need to get stronger on the hills.

Event comments:

Greenbrook racing puts on great events that are really well organized, have great volunteers & lots of them, and plenty of post-race drinks and food. My only complaint....ONLY 4 port-a-potties!!!! Not nearly enough!

Great race! Got me as to how the waves were set up! Can't figure it out either. Good job keeping yourself together during the washing machine swim.
