Hawaii Swim

Overcast
Total Time = 1h 07m 4s
Overall Rank = 94/275
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 14/33
Pre-race routine:

Set up transition and visualize the race. Stretching and pacing.
Swim
  • 12m 3s
  • 437 yards
  • 02m 45s / 100 yards
Comments:

Planned on being closer to the front to avoid the mob. Start caught me by surprise. Spent alot of time crawling on the reef and fighting off other swimmers. Only had about 150 yards of decent swimming. I did not get to swim around as much as usual.
What would you do differently?:

Be ready for the start and in a better position. Swim the course more before the start.
Transition 1
  • 01m 55s
Comments:

Got below 2 minutes finally. Now I need to keep improving. I have toe cages on my pedals and ended up on top of one which caused me to lose some spinning at the start.
What would you do differently?:

Clip in shoes, get faster in the T1.
Bike
  • 30m 25s
  • 10 miles
  • 19.73 mile/hr
Comments:

I had rode this course before the race and it helped a ton. I knew where the hills and turns were which allowed me to get in the right gear and go faster through the turns too.
What would you do differently?:

More speed with better cadence.
Transition 2
  • 01m 4s
Comments:

Had some traffic at the entrance to T2, but otherwise decent.
What would you do differently?:

Speed lace type of shoe or lace system. Would like to get this below 1 minute
Run
  • 22m 19s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 12s  min/mile
Comments:

Started on left side of the road then folks switched to the right side then switched again on the way back.
What would you do differently?:

Run Faster!
Post race
Warm down:

Walk around, hydrate and stretch.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The swim! Genetics too.

Event comments:

Tough

It was good to met you yesterday Shawn. That swim was something else eh? I've never had to swim that close the reef before. Congrats on improving T1!
